Shenzhen College of International Education: 

Founded in 2003, SCIE is the city’s first full-time high school (Year 10 to Year 13) teaching an international curriculum. SCIE is a highly selective day and boarding school teaching an international curriculum to Chinese students preparing them for oversea universities. Using English as the medium of instruction and communication, SCIE offers IGCSE and GCE AS and A-levels, mainly through Cambridge international. SCIE is a fully accredited member of the Council of International Schools (CIS) and a member school of the regional organisations: EARCOS and FOBISIA.

The mission of the College is to educate students in a challenging and international environment that leads to academic achievements at the highest level, and to develop social responsibility, creativity, initiative and enthusiasm, which provide each student with the best preparation for future opportunities.

SCIE has a very diversified staff who come from more than 20 countries, not only UK, New Zealand, America and Australia, but also Canada, Colombia, India, Ireland, South Africa and Spain. In 2020, the College has over 140 full-time teachers and 70 administrative staff members. 

In August 2020, the College moved to its brand new purpose-built campus in Antuoshan, Shenzhen. The new site is fully equipped for the College expansion with smart classrooms, a large number of science laboratories, a 750-seat theatre, sports facilities and all that we need to facilitate the high quality teaching and learning of the College community. The top floor, with a comfortable staff lounge, gym and designated areas for meetings and CPD, is accessible to staff only. Staff are housed in the separate adjacent staff block, which offers two and three-bedroom furnished apartments.

Antuoshan is in Futian, the CBD district of Shenzhen. The campus is within walking distance to international shops, supermarkets and restaurants. It is a stones thrown away from the Antuo Hill subway station, giving easy and convenient access to the city’s extensive metro network.

Specific Responsibilities: 

At our new campus, Chemistry now has 9 full time teachers and 3 technicians, and we will further expand to more than 20 teachers and a dedicated 15 teachers and a dedicated technician team by 2023 working in our 11 purpose-built chemistry labs. Teachers will have a variety of classes from IGCSE Chemistry in UK Years 10 and 11 and AS/AL Chemistry in UK Years 12 and 13. The subject is highly popular throughout the school with about two thirds of the cohort taking it at AS level and half the cohort at A Level. Results are very high, with over 90% achieving A/A* at IGCSE and almost 75% at A Level. Each year a number of students choose to apply to Chemistry courses in top universities in the UK and US, with a significant number taking up places in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Materials Sciences courses at Oxbridge.

We are looking for strong chemistry teachers with experience of A Level to join the team in this exciting period of development and expansion. Experience of teaching chemistry at the highest levels, with particular focus on practical lab skills and the ability to facilitate extension classes in Chemistry or Biochemistry will be an advantage. 

The regular working week is Monday – Friday, 08:00 – 16:30 (early finish at 15:00 on Fridays) and the normal student contact time is 24 x 40 minute periods per week (55% contact time), in addition to class preparation. Teachers also have 6 periods of personal time fixed into their timetables when they do not need to be at work. Teaching staff at SCIE are also expected to offer one hour after school of extra-curricular activity each week. Our school year is August to mid-June with all Chinese holidays (including 1 wk for October National Day and 3 wks for Chinese New Year) plus 2 weeks Christmas holiday.

Salary: 

According to our published salary scale, plus housing allowance or school apartment, full international medical cover (self + dependent) and annual flight allowance (self + spouse). 

Requirements: 

• A degree in your area of expertise 

• A teaching qualification (PGCE, BEd or equivalent) 

• 2 years teaching experience in the relevant area
