Job overview
We are looking to appoint a passionate individual to join us at Cheadle Hulme School as a Teacher of Chemistry from Easter 2025. The role is a maternity cover, with the possibility of this also being a Head of Department role.
The successful candidate will be able to teach up to GCSE level. The ability to teach up to A Level would be advantageous.
The Department
The Chemistry department consists of five full-time and two part-time teaching staff, and two full-time technicians. Several of the teaching staff also have other responsibilities within the School. The department has five very well-equipped modern laboratories, including a dedicated Sixth Form lab. We have a strong team ethos and are always looking to share good practice to improve the learning experience for the students. We believe in delivering material through a variety of approaches to help the students understand their work.
Chemistry is a very popular subject at A-Level. This year there are three sets in the Lower Sixth and three in the Upper Sixth. Each set is taught by two teachers who share the delivery of content. Set sizes vary between 10-14 students. The results at A- Level are very strong with % achieving A*-B ranging between 80 and 92% over the last three years. We deliver the AQA course and have developed a practically based scheme of work to fit with the new required competences. Students are encouraged to extend their knowledge through extra reading, attendance at talks and lectures, by tackling the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and taking part in the young analyst competition.
We follow the International GCSE from Edexcel, starting teaching in Year 9. In Year 10, students can choose Dual Award or the separate science route. Again our results for GCSE Chemistry are very strong with % achieving 9-7 ranging between 70 and 78% over the last three years. Set sizes range from 16-20 with a smaller set for weaker students of about 12. The Chemistry department delivers a weekly outreach programme to Year 5 students from local primary schools.
