Job overview

Required from April or September 2023, an enthusiastic and well qualified teacher of Mandarin to join our outstanding Languages Department. As well as teaching Chinese Mandarin, Anglo European is also a Confucius Classroom, manages the Essex-Jiangsu Resources Centre and delivers the DFE Mandarin Excellence programme, which involves supporting other local schools in the teaching of Mandarin. The successful candidate will be expected to promote the teaching and learning of Mandarin Chinese language and culture, and support cross-cultural exchanges. The school has three partner schools in China and regularly visits the country as part of the school’s extensive visits and exchanges programme, including the intensive study visit in Year 9 as part of the MEP Programme.

The school is looking for a teacher who has a track record of successful practice in the classroom and has the ability to work effectively with other colleagues to support the development of Chinese Mandarin at AES and in our partner schools. This involves a wide-ranging programme of enrichment.

This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher of Mandarin to join a successful and diverse team of language specialists in a school which believes strongly in all children learning a minimum of two languages and offering 8 different languages as part of its taught curriculum. Mandarin is taught from Years 7 to 11 as part of the Mandarin Excellence Programme and in the 6th form as part of the International Baccalaureate, A Level and at ab Initio, for those who wish to start learning this language in the Sixth Form.

In 2022, 100% of students gained GCSE 9-4 (ALPS 2) in Mandarin and 100% of our students achieved +5 (ALPS 2) IBS Ab Initio.

Anglo European School has an international ethos and is committed to developing ambitious, resilient and principled young people who have developed social, creative and linguistic skills to move confidently and communicate effectively beyond their own communities.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare and well-being of young people and their achievements both inside and outside school. The post requires enhanced DBS clearance, medical checks and satisfactory references.

The school is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all suitable candidates, regardless of any protected characteristics, and from under-represented backgrounds. Anglo European School is committed to providing equal opportunities for all.

About Anglo European School

Anglo European School is a 11-19, co-educational comprehensive school situated in Ingatestone, Essex. It has approximately 1,415 students.

The school was opened in 1973 after the closure of a secondary modern school led locals to campaign to keep the school open and the Local Authority, Essex, decided to establish a school with a “European Dimension”.

Anglo European School serves local needs but also draw students from across Essex and parts of London. In 1977 it became the first UK state school to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma and in 1995 the first comprehensive school to become a specialist Language college. In 2005 the school established the first co-headship model in a state secondary school.

As a centre of excellence for language learning, the school offers Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish as well as English as an Additional Language and Latin.  Up until age 16 all students study two languages other than English.

In the sixth form, students must study one language. They have a choice of A-levels or an opportunity to study the International Baccalaureate Diploma. There is also the chance to study selected parts of the IB Diploma with A-levels. In addition, the International Baccalaureate Career Programme provides an internationally recognised vocational qualification.
