Job overview

Founded in 1818, Dollar Academy is the world’s oldest co-educational day and boarding school.  The Academy is situated in about 50 acres of grounds, amidst delightful scenery, in the small town of Dollar at the foot of the Ochil Hills.  Centrally located, Dollar is only 20 minutes’ drive from Stirling, 30 minutes from Perth and under an hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow. The school is a 25 minute drive from the world-renowned Gleneagles resort and an hour from the famous beaches and golf courses of St Andrews.  With approximately 1300 pupils the school is renowned for its innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Continuous development of staff and facilities is also paramount at Dollar.

Classics has a long and successful tradition at Dollar Academy and we wish to appoint an enthusiastic Classics specialist to further the work of the department.  The focus of this post will be the teaching of both Latin and Classical Studies.  Applicants should have a genuine love of the subject area, together with a commitment to developing pupils’ interests in the classical world and its legacy.  This position would be equally suited to a newly qualified candidate or a more experienced teacher.

The ethos of the department is based upon a commitment to make Classics open and accessible to all pupils.  A combined Classics course, comprising lessons in both Latin and Classical Studies, is taught to all pupils in Forms I and II.  Both subjects are then taught as options through the school right up to Advanced Higher level.  Knowledge of the Scottish education system would be extremely helpful, but is not essential.  Many pupils who study in the department go on to read related subjects at University.  In our teaching, there is an emphasis on encouraging our pupils to develop to the best of their abilities the range of skills needed to interpret all types of source material, and also to acquire the command of language needed to translate accurately and fluently from Latin into English.

There are four teachers in the department, which is housed within the main Playfair Building.  Both our main classrooms are excellent teaching spaces – large and well-appointed with integrated ICT provision.   A third classroom, also in the Playfair building, is ideal for seminar-style teaching with smaller groups of senior pupils.

The Academy has a rich co-curricular programme in which all members of staff are expected to participate.

The salary for the post will be in accordance with the SNCT main grade scales with the Dollar enhancement of 10% in addition. It should be noted that the Chartered Teachers pay scale does not apply to teachers employed by the Academy.

Candidates should either be registered with the GTC Scotland, or eligible for registration.

Letters of application, accompanied by the completed application form (available on the school website www.dollaracademy.org.uk) should be sent to The Human Resources Manager, Dollar Academy, Dollar FK14 7DU (or by e-mail to recruitment@dollaracademy.org.uk) by noon on Friday 12th February 2021.  Interviews shall be held during week beginning 22nd February 2021.

All appointments are subject to receipt of a satisfactory PVG Scheme Record or Scheme

About Dollar Academy

Dollar Academy was founded in 1818 as the UK’s first co-educational day and boarding school and has been at the heart of Scotland’s educational development for 200 years. The school is the Sunday Times Scottish Independent School of the Year 2018.

Dollar has over 1250 pupils aged 5-18, of whom approximately 75 are boarders. The school’s extensive 70 acre campus is set in a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Central Scotland and is within easy reach of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh airport is conveniently situated and can be reached in 45 minutes.

Dollar is distinguished by its excellence in pastoral care, co-curricular provision and classroom teaching.

Enjoyment of learning lies at the heart of this school and the aim is for all pupils to gain satisfaction from a real commitment to study and participation in the great range of sporting, art and cultural activities on offer.

Dollar pupils undertake internationally recognised SQA examination courses and, in a typical year, over 65% of exam results are at Grade A. Although firmly grounded in the values of Scottish education, Dollar takes a deliberately international approach and the diverse boarding community is at the heart of school life.
