Job overview

Job Title: Teacher of Classics

Location: Sedbergh School

Contract Type: Full or part-time, permanent

Salary: Competitive

Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by Roger Lupton, is an independent co-educational boarding school. Set in the spectacular Yorkshire Dales National Park, the School also benefits from fast motorway and rail access to the rest of the UK.

The School has an excellent reputation in academics, sports, and creative arts, which has led to continued growth in the pupil roll for the past ten years. Circa 600 pupils are accommodated in a full boarding school environment and a further 200 at Sedbergh Prep School in Casterton.

We are currently seeking a motivated and positive individual to join our team as Teacher of Classics from September 2023. The role will be part-time, 0.5 FTE. However, for the right candidate who can contribute to the wider co-curricular needs of the School, there may be the opportunity for a full-time position.

The Classics Department is a small, close-knit team consisting of one full-time Classicist, one full-time Historian/Classicist and one part-time Classical Civilisation teacher (who is also the Head of Cricket). The Department has two dedicated classrooms, which include an extensive Classical library. We teach Latin and Classical Civilisation from Year 9 (where it is compulsory to do a Classical subject) right through to A-level. We also offer Greek as a co-curricular activity. This year, we are working towards the Intermediate Certificate.

Classical Civilisation is an increasingly popular option both at GCSE and A Level. Subject matter is diverse and option choice is again guided by Teacher interest. These specifications bring an opportunity for the study of fresh material and indeed the need for creative and inspirational teaching.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach Classical Civilisation from Year 9 to 13. The ability to teach Latin (or Greek) to any age group would be an advantage.

The role offers great opportunities for personal and professional development in a School that aspires to be the market leader in all areas of Boarding School life. A proactive attitude to INSET training is encouraged and supported by the School.

Person Specification:

Candidates should be well-qualified graduates of Classics or a Classics-related degree; a teaching qualification is desirable, though not essential.

We are looking for applicants who are passionate advocates for Classics and can articulate a vision for the place of the subject in a 21st Century curriculum. They must also have strong empathic and interpersonal skills, coupled with a genuine interest in young people. They must combine an intellectually rigorous and scholarly approach to the subject with an obvious enthusiasm for it. They should also be organised in their approach and have a short, medium and long-term plans to make sure that their sets fulfill their potential. A familiarity with Boarding education and the ability to contribute to co-curricular life at Sedbergh would also be useful.

In exchange the School will offer:

  • A competitive salary;
  • Contributory Pension Scheme – to include life cover while remaining within the scheme;
  • Enhanced Sick Pay entitlement - conditional on meeting the demands of the scheme;
  • Ride2Work;
  • Service awards;
  • Opportunity to see School productions;
  • Staff events and family fun days!
  • Use of the School’s vast facilities (outside the School timetabling) including the indoor swimming pool, tennis and squash courts and Hirst Sport Centre.

About Sedbergh School

The magnificent location of Sedbergh means pupils can enjoy school life in a safe, healthy and dynamic environment. The opportunities for outdoor activities are almost unlimited - from a walk in the hills to mountain biking, or the calm of fishing to the challenge of caving. While academic study is central for every pupil the experiences of a Sedberghian are not confined to the classroom .

 Sedbergh is a School where pupils are presented  with a huge range of opportunity. It is a School which expects its pupils to seize the opportunity or, better, create the opportunity. It is our firm belief that it is much better to try something and fail rather than avoiding something because of the fear of failing. This culture ultimately breeds a positive attitude and greatly increases the likelihood of success.
