Job Title: Teacher of Classics

Job Purpose: To inspire, encourage and empower our students to achieve their very best in the subjects of Latin, Classical Civilisation and Classical Greek (candidates are not expected to be able to the teach all 3 subjects)

 

Reporting Line: Head of Classics

Start Date: September 2023

Tenure: Permanent, Part-Time

Salary:  Competitive – based on the Surbiton High School Pay Scale

Key Responsibilities:

Teaching and Learning

  • To possess and maintain a deep and secure knowledge of your subject and the best practice pedagogy associated with its delivery.
  • To create a challenging and stimulating classroom climate that will motivate pupils to learn, think independently, take risks, empathise with others, and perform to the best of their abilities.
  • To support every pupil in their learning, making them feel included, secure and valued.
  • To be consistent, fair and create an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect.
  • To be aware of the learning needs of the pupils you teach and ensure that each pupil is given every opportunity to fulfil their potential.
  • To monitor progress against prior attainment and employ effective intervention strategies when required.


 

Pastoral

  • To conduct yourself in an appropriate professional manner at all times, supporting and fostering the aims and safeguarding policies of the School.
  • To be prepared to take on the role of Form Tutor, which will encompass academic, pastoral and administrative responsibilities. Tutors have oversight of their tutees’ general well-being and academic progress, and they are the first point of contact for parents.

                                 

General

  • To contribute to the organisation and running of co-curricular and enrichment activities.
  • To uphold the School’s code of conduct and the values of Surbiton High School.
  • To maintain good order and discipline amongst pupils and be active in implementing the School’s policies for rewards and sanctions.
  • To attend formal parents’ evenings and maintain effective communication with parents, as appropriate.
  • To attend staff and weekly departmental meetings, as required.


 

Professional Development

  • To contribute, as appropriate, to departmental policies, schemes of work, digital learning resources as well as development planning.
  • To be an active participant in CPD training opportunities, sharing best practice with colleagues, as requested.
  • To participate in the annual performance review, appraisal and development programme.

 

Subject Specific

  • The Classics department is vibrant and well respected with high numbers of students wishing to study 1 or more of the 3 classical subjects on offer. We offer Classical Greek, Classical Civilisation and Latin at GCSE and A-level.
  • We are advertising for a part-time member of staff to expand the department, as the number of pupils choosing to study classical subjects has been rising every year for the last 4 years. We have a projected Classical Greek A-level class of 4 starting in September! It would therefore be an advantage if candidates can teach 2 of the 3 subjects, however, please don’t be put off if you are a solo Classical Civilisation or Latin teacher. Latin is taught to all year 7 pupils with around one third of the year group choosing to continue with Latin in Year 8 and 9.
  • We use the Cambridge Latin course in Year 7 and graduate to De Romanis in Years 8 and 9. We use John Taylor’s GCSE course book for Latin and Classical Greek in Key Stage 4. 
  • We run regular trips, both day and residential, and encourage members of the department to launch and run trips and activities to enable our pupils to develop all aspects of their classical interests. We recently took 43 students to Greece and have trips to Provence and Hadrian’s Wall in the planning stages, in addition to local theatre and cultural day and evening trips.


Person Specification

The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

 

Qualifications

  • Good Honours degree
  • A postgraduate teaching qualification including QTS, is strongly desirable
  • Evidence of further relevant professional development
  • ECTs welcomed

 

Skills

  • Ability to deliver inspiring and engaging lessons at KS3, GCSE and A-level is desirable, however, teachers of KS3 and KS4 only would be considered - please make this clear on application
  • The ability to inspire, motivate and support pupils and colleagues in a successful and dynamic school
  • Excellent organisational, administrative and ICT skills

 

Experience

  • A proven track record of delivering on academic performance
  • Evidence of successful, inspiring and innovative teaching at all levels
  • Experience of collaborating with colleagues

 

Knowledge

  • Up-to-date knowledge of successful and innovative teaching and the latest curriculum developments and initiatives

 

Personal Qualities

  • High levels of personal and professional integrity and an ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality
  • Personal warmth to gain the confidence of pupils, staff and parents
  • Positive rapport with pupils

  • A team player with leadership qualities
