Teacher of Classics

Oundle SchoolNorthamptonshire

To start September 2021, with an induction in the last week of August, we are seeking an exceptional Teacher of Classics to develop and inspire our pupils, and who is able to participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole.  In return the School is committed to helping you develop further as a teacher by supporting you with appropriate professional development.

THE DEPARTMENT

There are currently ten Classicists in a thriving and well supported department. Oundle School has a strong belief that Classics has much to contribute to the intellectual, social, artistic, moral and cultural development of our pupils. The availability of classical language courses, offering pupils the privilege of reading Greek and Latin authors in the original, is one of the distinctive features of the School.

Classical literature and ancient history are made more widely accessible through A level Classical Civilisation. The department is proud of its consistently outstanding public exam results and of the numerous ways in which pupils develop a real love of Classics during their time at the School.

Many of our pupils go on to study Classics-related subject at university. We foster close links with university departments through a programme of visiting speakers and trips, and also offer a range of in-house talks and activities led by members of staff and senior pupils. Recent years have seen a senior trip to Greece and a combined Classics and Geography junior trip to the Bay of Naples. We value our links with prep schools and with Cambridge University Faculty of Education and we often take a PGCE student for part of the academic year. We have also embarked upon delivering a Latin curriculum to Year 6 of Laxton Junior School.

THE TOWN

We are fortunate in our location at the heart of a beautiful market town: School and town are part of the same community and our pupils take their place within this community, not isolated from it. The town has a spirited cultural life, with an annual international festival, literature festival, and frequent performances of nationally touring shows at the School’s Stahl theatre.  The town has a range of independent shops, coffee houses, pubs and eateries. Encircled by the river Nene, the town is also blessed to be surrounded by beautiful countryside with many picturesque villages nearby.

For those moving into the area, accommodation may be available at a discounted rate.  Other benefits include a salary on the generous Oundle pay scale.
