Job overview

The School is seeking to appoint a well-qualified graduate to teach approximately 0.5 of a timetable and to share in the teaching of Latin throughout the School to Advanced Level and potentially Oxbridge preparation.

The person appointed will be an enthusiast for their subject, with the ability to communicate to girls at all levels.  The ability to offer Ancient Greek or Classical Civilisation will be an advantage, but is not a requirement.

There are currently two full-time Classicists within the department.   Classics is well-established at the School, with a number of girls each year pursuing the subject at Sixth Form and university level, including Oxbridge.

All girls start Latin in Year 7.  In Years 8 and 9 they may continue Latin or choose to study Classical Civilisation.  Latin is offered at GCSE (Eduqas) in the main option block and as a twilight option.  Girls follow the Cambridge Latin Course.  In recent years there have been two GCSE Latin groups as well as a GCSE Greek group.

In the Sixth Form, Latin and Classical Civilisation are offered to A Level.  The School has also introduced A Level Greek from 2018.

Girls often go on to study Classics at university, including Oxford and Cambridge, with excellent results.

The Classics Department organises a number of trips each year for girls at all levels.  There have been trips to Athens, Rome and the Bay of Naples and day trips include Fishbourne Roman Palace and Bignor Roman Villa, as well as theatre visits to see the Actors of Dionysus.

About Walthamstow Hall Senior School

Introduction

Thank you for your interest in working at Walthamstow Hall.  We educate girls with academic potential to lead confident, challenging and fulfilling lives in the 21st century.

School Ethos

We believe in a true understanding of the root meaning of the word education, from the Latin verb educo: I lead forth, I raise up.  Not, ‘I cram full of facts or I make to jump through hoops’.  At Walthamstow Hall, pupils will discover that learning is an active process which enables them to get personally involved, not one which just passively happens to them.

We offer pupils an environment based on trust, security and friendship, where they have the confidence to try to be their best.  And by confidence we don’t mean brash or arrogant.  We mean that, whether innately ebullient, or whether quite shy, Wally girls are characterised by a quiet assurance that comes from knowing who they are and, moreover, that they are valued for who they are, by us and by each other.  This, we believe, is the best preparation for whatever life has in store.

School Details

There are approximately 580 pupils in the School 3 - 18, of which 442 are currently at Senior School. The Junior School (2 - 11 years) is on a separate site.
