Job overview

Due to our expansion as a result of the growing demand for student places, the Governors of Kelmscott School are seeking to appoint a well-qualified and highly enthusiastic colleague to join our thriving and successful Classics Department. The ideal candidate will have outstanding subject knowledge and a genuine passion for Classics, and be able to teach Latin and/or Ancient Greek and Classical Civilisation up to GCSE level.

We are looking for a dynamic, inspirational, and creative teacher who can raise attainment, teach across the full age and ability range, and motivate pupils, whilst also being a strong team player. The successful candidate will gain valuable career experience and benefit from our exciting and bespoke professional development programme, tailored to their individual needs.

The Classics Department offers a broad and ambitious curriculum, designed to engage students through a wide range of topics from the ancient world. Students are introduced to Latin, Ancient Greek, and Classical Civilisation from Year 7, and uptake of these subjects at GCSE level continues to grow. Our students achieve excellent results, and broadening engagement with the classical world remains central to our department’s philosophy. To support this, we offer a variety of enrichment opportunities, including trips (both day and residential), co-curricular activities, and clubs. Kelmscott is proud to champion the teaching of Classics and is committed to remaining a centre of excellence for classical education in Waltham Forest. We are especially proud to be the only state school in London—and one of the few across the UK—to offer all three Classical subjects from Key Stage 3 through to GCSE. Kelmscott School is a highly ambitious school in the heart of East London. Inclusion is at the very heart of all that we do. Our school motto is ‘Putting Learning First’ something that we hold dear. We also have a yearly mantra which this year is ‘Excellence is not an act but a habit’. Colleagues at our school are very happy and as a result we have low staff turnover. Staff wellbeing and work life balance is a priority for us as we believe that our staff, work at their best when they are also able to commit fully to their family and personal lives. We have flexible working for teaching staff where they work from anywhere during PPA time. Behaviour of students at Kelmscott is impeccable. Our behaviour systems are designed to allow teachers to teach and our students to learn. Our classrooms are ‘disruption free’ something we would be happy to show you.

We received an ungraded inspection in January 2025, Ofsted saw two typical Kelmscott days and were highly impressed with what they saw. “Behaviour is exemplary” and “the curriculum is highly ambitious” are two soundbites from a very positive report indeed.
