About Mayfield Grammar School, Gravesend

Mayfield Grammar School, Gravesend is an Academy Status selective girls’ school with boys in the sixth form which is situated in the town of Gravesend, Kent. There are circa 1000 students on the school roll, of which 240 study in the sixth form.

The school was founded in 1914 as the County School for Girls, taking as its motto “Per aspera ad astra” (Through adversity to the stars), and moved to its present site in 1926.  The original building with its bell tower, central quadrangle and walled playing fields remains today much as it was then, however the school has enjoyed many modernisations.  Throughout its history the school has remained selective and was known successively as Gravesend School for Girls, then Gravesend Grammar School for Girls, and now Mayfield Grammar School, Gravesend to reflect the fact that boys are accepted into the Sixth Form.  The school benefits from a loyal, stable, well qualified and experienced staff who work together as a team.  Staff-student relationships flourish in a relaxed and caring environment, where students are encouraged to achieve their full potential.  The calm friendly atmosphere, combined with acceptance of the need for hard work, provides a high success rate in public examinations.  This gives the school its good reputation and continues the tradition of excellence which began in 1914.

The town of Gravesend has a population of 66,000, and has easy access via road and rail.

Values and vision

The school aims to stimulate and challenge the minds of students in order for them to attain the highest academic achievement. Interest is not confined to academic results, but also ensuring that students acquire life-long skills, which prepare them for the challenges of the future. There is also encouragement for each student to develop their personal talents through a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities. The school is a happy and caring community which believes in traditional values.

Mayfield Grammar has been a Specialist Science College since 2004, and a Specialist Languages College since 2009. The school is continuing to enhance the curriculum and the quality of teaching and learning. There are extensive ICT facilities across the curriculum and the school has created links with local secondary and primary schools.

Ofsted

“As a result of outstanding teaching that encourages students to work independently and with each other, students, including those who attend other settings for part of their studies, make excellent progress in the sixth form and are exceptionally well prepared for the next stage in their education. Almost all the parents and carers who responded to the Parent View survey agree that their child makes good progress in the school.”
