Job overview

Welcome to Ada!

We are the Government’s National College for Digital Skills, the top performing institution for the new Computer Science BTEC and are passionate about educating, supporting and creating the next generation of digital pioneers.

We are a small, specialist college where all our students are passionate about tech and we are committed to supporting them to progress onto highly skilled roles in the digital sector. All students study computer science for at least 60% of their curriculum, with regular off-curriculum industry projects with partners such as King Games, Deloitte and Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

From our first cohort, over 80% of our alumni went on to study computer science related degrees or progressed into tech apprenticeships with firms like Google and Siemens – many of them delivered by our very own Higher Level and Degree apprenticeship team who train entry-level developers and data analysts for 25+ blue-chip companies.

We are passionate about high quality teaching and learning, using industry’s problems to bring computer science to life for our learners and thinking of innovative new approaches to communicating some of tech’s more challenging concepts!

As a small college in Tottenham Hale, North London, we have a very diverse student body from a wide range of backgrounds and are committed to using tech as a tool for social mobility. We offer a supportive culture for students and staff and our excellent industry links ensure you get regular formal and informal CPD to support your teaching and technical knowledge and development.

We believe there is no better place to teach computer science in the country and very much hope you choose to apply.

We received Good with Outstanding features in  our first Ofsted inspection   in October 2018.

Criteria for the role

We are looking for an excellent teacher of Computer Science to join our talented team of 6th form teachers at Ada.

Whilst the successful candidate will have strong academic credentials, you may already have a proven record of outstanding teaching, or be new to the profession, in which case they would be supported by the college’s thorough mentoring programme.

A vital qualification will be that you share the vision of the college to deliver our core computing curriculum in an innovative and engaging way that embodies the beliefs and values of the College; to put real world industry involvement at the heart of our curriculum.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

You will work closely with other teachers in an experienced Computer Science team to develop high quality content and deliver excellent lessons. For experienced practitioners, there may be opportunities for you to lead on elements of the course suited to your individual expertise.

At Ada, you will work in an agile and fast-paced environment with an aspirational group of teachers and students who are super passionate about computing and digital skills. Our ambition is to grow our student volumes as our reputation grows while maintaining the high quality and unique nature of our cohort.

There may also be opportunities to teach across the 6th form and HE phases for suitable candidates.

Additional Information

All 6th form students complete a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Computer Science, and may pick one or more additional subjects to study alongside this qualification.  The options we offer allow students to study subjects that will equip them for a range of roles available within the digital sector.

JOB DESCRIPTION

As a Computer Science Teacher:

  • To teach computer science to Ada students, maintaining outstanding standards of teaching, learning and assessment.
  • To support the college in developing an inventive approach to teaching, learning and assessment in computer science so that all students are challenged effectively and enabled not simply to get high grades but also to gain an excellent understanding of the subject which propels them into successful futures.
  • To prepare appropriate resources for lessons.
  • To provide academic support for students in their lessons, as well as a reasonable degree of support outside lessons (e.g. after college or during part of lunch) to ensure that every student makes continuous and effective progress.
  • To provide feedback on students’ progress to the college, to parents/carers and to students themselves where appropriate and as directed by Senior Leaders.

As a Team Leader (tutor):

  • To take responsibility for the care, guidance and support and the academic monitoring and eventual outcomes of a Team (tutorial group), to include tracking and reporting on students’ attendance and their academic, social and personal development, and taking actions to improve these outcomes.
  • To ensure that all students observe Ada policies relating to behaviour, attendance and other matters, and that they take proper care of Ada’s environment and resources.
  • To prioritise at all times the safety and well-being of the students by following the college’s Welfare & Safeguarding policies.

As a member of staff:

  • To contribute to the extended curriculum, including by supporting and developing the academic literacy of students in their own teaching.

  • To embody and promote the college values.
  • To contribute to the establishment and maintenance of a caring, positive, safe and stimulating environment for each student at Ada.
  • To prioritise at all times the safety and well-being of the students by following the college’s Welfare & Safeguarding policies.
  • To attend training days in reasonable proximity to the start or end of the Ada terms (usually, within four working days of the published term dates), and demonstrating a personal commitment to be fully up-to-date with training.
  • To take a share of the duties around student supervision.
  • To provide cover for absent colleagues, and participate in arrangements for students’ supervision during public examinations.
  • To undertake any other duties which may be reasonably required by Ada.

About Ada, the National College for Digital Skills

At Ada, the National College for Digital Skills, we have a mission to work with industry to design and deliver an education that empowers all our students, especially women and those from low-income backgrounds, to progress into highly skilled digital roles and lead flourishing lives. Through our social mission and excellent digital skills provision, we are changing the face of the tech sector, expanding the talent pipeline and transforming lives.

The College focuses on achieving three aims:

  1. To be a centre of excellence for the teaching and learning of advanced digital skills
  2. To offer students a viable, high-quality alternative to university
  3. To be a beacon of best practice for employment-focused provision

Ada was announced by the Prime Minister in December 2014; England’s first new FE College since 1993, we opened our doors at our main campus in Tottenham Hale for the first time in September 2016. Since then we’ve gone from strength to strength including a Good with Outstanding features in our first and second Ofsted inspections.

The digital industry is experiencing epic growth but there is a talent shortage. Over 130,000 tech jobs are available each year in the UK but students are leaving education without sufficient knowledge and experience to get the job. We want to change this.

With Ada, students can learn relevant digital skills to pursue their dream job in tech. We are a unique community which puts computer programming at the heart of everything we do. Our students are the future game changers: challenging the norm, excited by change, and resilient in the face of adversity.

We want to remove the glass ceiling for women and individuals from low-income backgrounds in the tech industry. Everyone, from any background, is entitled to a quality education and a better future. Our community is united by digital so we work closely with Haringey Council and the local community to ensure the inclusion extends beyond the walls of Ada.

Location & Provision:

As of May 2021, we have 145 16-19 students enrolled, these students study the academically stretching BTEC in Computer Science along with a range of complimentary A-Levels.

Our Higher and Degree Level Apprenticeships in Digital Innovation (aligned to the Software Developer Standard) and Data Analytics and Visualisation (aligned to the Data Analyst Standard) have almost 200 apprentices enrolled from a range of organisations.

Our curriculum is academically stretching but practically rigorous and truly embedded with industry. Students are provided with a one on one coach from industry and employers help design and deliver our curriculum and careers advice. The positive impact to students and employers is demonstrable.

We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved in just four years, we have had some fantastic successes and plans for more to come. There are many ways to help make a difference to these young people and to the tech sector by volunteering, taking apprentices and philanthropy; for more information on working with us please visit www.ada.ac.uk
