Job overview

The school is looking to appoint a committed, enthusiastic individual as a teacher of Computing and ICT. The Business & Computing Department is well-resourced at Balshaw’s. There are classrooms with ICT suites in them as well as specialist computers in classrooms such as Design Technology along with bookable laptops. Each teacher at Balshaw’s is also issued with their own laptop computer.

We are looking to recruit the best teacher possible to this role whether they are an NQT or an experienced teacher looking for the opportunity to work in an outstanding school with a reputation for excellence in South Ribble. The role is initially a 12 month contract (FTE 0.6) whilst a review of the structure of the department takes place.

The Department offers GCSE Computer Science at KS4 as well as GCSE Business. Computer Science is a popular option for students and all students study Computing throughout KS3 where they are taught for 3 hours over a fortnight.

Balshaw’s is the Hub School for the Computing At Schools (CAS) network for the Chorley and South Ribble school districts and prides itself on driving the subject forward. The school is fortunate to have good links with Microsoft UK through one of the members of the governing body who is a senior employee of the Microsoft Corporation.

The ICT infrastructure is extremely well-supported by the Network Team under the direction of the Network Manager. There is Wi-Fi throughout the school; the network is highly stable and the school is looking to use Microsoft cloud services as part of Office 365 to store staff and student work. Staff are able to access all school services via remote application services.

Professional Development:

Staff at Balshaw’s have an hour per week of dedicated Professional Development time which takes place on a Monday evening. Balshaw’s is also a member of a number of local Teaching Alliance networks and staff both deliver training and are able to take part in training across these networks.

All staff are provided with laptop computers, have a dedicated staffroom, staff silent working room, CPD library, Staff Health and Wellbeing Resource Library and various kitchen areas and departmental offices. Staff also benefit from the use of a fully-equipped fitness suite.

The closing date is midnight on Monday 6th May. Shortlisting is expected to be completed on Tuesday 7th May with interviews scheduled for Tuesday 14th May

About Balshaw's Church Of England High School

Balshaw’s is a mixed, comprehensive, Church of England secondary school without sixth form situated in Leyland, Lancashire. It is a community state school operating under the Diocese of Blackburn. An average-sized school, it will provide 925 places for students aged 11-16, when fully subscribed.

Balshaw's was founded as a charity school in Leyland in June 1782 by Richard Balshaw. It moved to its current Church Road site in September 1932. Although the school has no official sixth-form, it works closely with nearby Runshaw College, which was originally set up in 1974 to cater for school-leavers from Balshaw's and Parklands High School.

Values and Vision

Richard Balshaw wanted the school to be a supportive and inclusive place that benefited the whole child, and his view remains important today. The school has high expectations of pupils and aims for excellence, at the same time as upholding its Christian faith and creating healthy working relationships with parents and local churches, businesses, industries and the community. Balshaw's motto “Non sibi sed aliis”, which translates as “not for ourselves but for others”, reflects the selfless and tolerant nature of the school .

Ofsted

“Under the exceptional leadership of the headteacher, students and staff flourish at Balshaw’s. Governors and all leaders and managers waste no time in tackling the slightest weakness so students’ achievement is outstanding. Students behave extremely well. They say how very safe they feel and are particularly appreciative of the exceptional personal support which the school gives them.”
