Job overview

The Post

The Burgate School and Sixth Form is excited to seek a dedicated and progressive Computing teacher who can deliver outstanding lessons across the curriculum at this charming, rural school on the edge of the New Forest. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach A-level and GCSE Computer Science and IT as well as Computing in Years 7 and 8. The successful applicant will be supported with both additional planning time and enhanced remuneration.

Subject Details

Computing is taught to all students in Years 7, 8 for 2 hours each week. The candidate will have the opportunity to shape the delivery of this curriculum and help with the evolution from ICT to computing.

Computer Science and CiDA are optional at Key Stage 4, which begins in Year 9 through to Year 11. At present students work towards the AQA Computer Science specification or the Pearson CiDA specification and are allocated five teaching hours a fortnight. Our GCSE results are very good and continue to improve. The percentage of students gaining A*- C in Computing in 2017 was 76.5% and 83% in ICT.

In the Sixth Form we run A-Level AQA Computer Science and Pearson BTEC Level 3 in IT, and all students have nine teaching hours over two weeks. The successful candidate would be expected to teach in the Sixth Form.

The successful applicant would ideally be highly proficient in more than one programming language. At present all Computing students learn several common programming languages from Year 7 to A-Level. The desire to be involved in extra-curricular activities would also be advantageous; we have built strong links with Bournemouth University, our STEM department and other schools in the area and we would like to build on these links in the future.

The school has recently invested heavily in ICT and installed a new Network which has improved its quality for both students and teachers. Remote access to the school network, and all the applications on the network are available and we use SIMS as a central information management system.

The Computing department at present comprises three full time teachers and the department has three specialist rooms, all of which have whiteboard walls and twin projectors, 28 student PCs and tables for practical computing such as Micro:Bit buggies and clay animation theatres.
