Job overview

School Wording – Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 32 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 15 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.

Penicuik High School is a six year non denominational school which serves the southern and western parts of the town of Penicuik in Midlothian. The school is set in the heart of Penicuik and has provided education on the current site since 1937. The school offers the full range of courses to our students from the Broad General Education courses through to National Qualifications in the senior school. It is a particular feature of the school that we are able to meet the curricular needs of all our learners. At Advanced Higher level where a course is not available within the school we will seek to make use of consortia arrangements with other local school where appropriate. We are proud to be an inclusive school that ensures the needs of all our learners are met. Structural changes to our building have allowed us to become more compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act allowing easy access to almost all areas of the school.

Welcome to Penicuik High School

On the outskirts of Edinburgh, nestled in the beautiful Pentland Hills and at the very heart of the community of Penicuik, sits Penicuik High School.

Providing education for the community since 1937, we are very proud of our traditions and standing, but most proud of our students, their achievements and their progress.

We see them as ‘our’ students, we delight in what they accomplish, and take great pride when they achieve the confidence to express the best of themselves. We are committed to them. Their learning is ‘lifelong’, and knowing this Penicuik High School and its pupils look with confidence at the present and towards the future, pursuing excellence as we go.    Our values sit at the heart of all we do for and expect of each other in the school, PRIDE in Penicuik; Participation, Respect, Inclusion, Determination and Excellence. Unsurprisingly, the relationships between students and staff are outstanding.

The vision for our curriculum is that it supports learners in this pursuit of excellence and delivering consistent, high quality learning and teaching is our prime aim.

Teachers are encouraged to lead and collaborate on best practice in learning and teaching, with the school making very good progress in developing students as Visible Learners in line with John Hattie’s latest research. Teachers are also challenged to think about the development of students as individuals, within subject areas but beyond these too, to ‘add value’ to the Penicuik High School experience. As a result students participate and lead their own learning, they learn ‘actively’, and they are encouraged to regard their learning as a personal responsibility.

Penicuik High offers an excellent blend of academic as well as cultural, creative and sporting opportunities that we believe all young adults thrive on. We support them in becoming eager participants in all that the school has to offer, as well as being people who respect others. This has led to an outstanding record of academic, sporting and community achievements. Our school record label, Burnt-out Records, for example provides an unmatched community vehicle for musical events and the development of young talented musicians and song-writers.

Opportunities beyond the formal curriculum such as Duke of Edinburgh, John Muir, Prince’s Trust, Youth Achievement and Sports Leaders Awards as well as partnerships with Edinburgh College and Queen Margaret University ensure a rich and varied learning experience for all of our students.

We take pride in our students, their accomplishments and in our staff, and indeed we have much to be proud of.

D MacDonald, Acting Headteacher
