About the role: Milestone Academy are seeking to appoint a talented and motivated Teacher of Construction to join us in Term 3 (January 2022). Our successful candidate will offer the very best teaching and learning to our pupils and ensure they achieve the excellent outcomes they deserve. We can offer a wide range of developmental opportunities to work with pupils with varying levels of need across different settings, and we offer excellent continuing professional development opportunities to increase your knowledge and skills and allow you to progress your career. We are driven to ensure our pupils are safe and happy and we have high expectations that every pupil will be valued, challenged and supported to make sustained academic and personal progress. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join a consistently Outstanding SEN academy!

This unique opportunity would allow you to lead the curriculum delivering BTEC and Ascentis qualifications to very small groups of students aged 14-19. We are looking for an experienced practitioner with the passion, knowledge and skills to deliver Entry Level 2 - Level 1 qualifications to young people with a range of special educational needs including Autism. You will need to have enthusiasm and patience to personalise learning and have the communication skills needed to collaborate with a range of stakeholders including awarding body reviewers. We have an impressive Horticulture area including polytunnels and raised beds and have a consistent pass rate of 100% for these courses due to the excellent curriculum already in place.

Working with us at Milestone Academy: Milestone Academy is a large special school for pupils with Profound, Severe and Complex needs, and is part of Leigh Academies Trust.  We currently have 385 pupils on roll aged between the ages of 2 and 19. The academy comprises a main site and four satellite provisions, each of which are based within other LAT mainstream academies. Milestone Academy has been judged as Outstanding by Ofsted at our last three inspections. Click here to view our website and learn more about Milestone Academy.

Milestone Academy is a significantly large special school complete with the formation since 2015 of four satellites provisions based in fellow LAT mainstream academies. Despite this size, each individual pupil from aged 2 -19 wholeheartedly matters to us as do their destinations when our pupils leave Milestone Academy for their life in modern Britain.

Milestone Academy’s philosophy is wrapped around the Principal’s challenge for staff to relentlessly pursue the quality delivery of our Core Moral Purpose. We absolutely believe our families should expect pupils in our care to make progress over time, no matter how small these steps sometimes are.

To ensure there is a sense of belonging for our pupils and staff, the Principal has applied the notions of distributing leadership and delegating authority. This approach sees the academy based in four Phases (up to 100 pupils and 45 staff), each of whom are led by an Assistant Principal who is supported by a Phase Leader (equivalent to a Key Stage Leader) and Behaviour Lead. Each Phase reports into the Vice Principal. In turn, we experience regular support and well-apportioned challenge from LAT via the COO, ensuring we strive to keep ‘on top of our game’.

Whilst we are an active member of our parent group, Leigh Academies Trust, we also enjoy being a partner school of Kent Special Education Needs Schools Trust and take a national perspective on SEN and PSCN via our chosen membership of Challenge Partners group.

Being part of Leigh Academies Trust: As of 1st September 2021, our Trust comprises 31 geographically organised academies (15 secondaries, 14 primaries and 2 special) educating 20,000 students, and employing over 2,500 talented staff. The Trust is establishing four ‘clusters’ of academies: North West Kent; Central Kent; South East London; Medway. In addition, the Trust is responsible for one of the region’s biggest initial teaching training organisations, a large teaching school hub and is an accredited apprenticeship provider. Click here to view our future plans in our Vision 2025 document.

As part of Leigh Academies Trust you will have ample opportunity to collaborate with your peers both within the academy and across the whole Trust. This is an important part of our vision as we know through experience that we perform better when we work together. You are supported to undertake regular self-development to continue your professional development and hopefully progress further within the organisation.

Our commitment to safeguarding: Leigh Academies Trust and all of our academies are committed to ensuring the highest levels of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our pupils, and we expect all our staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  We adopt a fair, robust and consistent recruitment process across all academies and business units.  All offers of employment are subject to an Enhanced DBS check, references, and where applicable, a prohibition from teaching check.

Our commitment to equality and diversity: As a Trust we are passionate about diversity and recognise that as individuals, we all bring something unique to the role regardless of any protected characteristics which is why we treat all of our people equally, without compromise.  We are committed to providing equality and fairness throughout our recruitment and employment practices and not to discriminate on any grounds.

Based on the quality and quantity of applications received, Leigh Academies Trust reserves the right to close this vacancy sooner than the specified closing date.  Applicants will be notified of this where possible.  Therefore, early applications are encouraged.

Welcome to Milestone Academy, part of Leigh Academies Trust. We are a proud school serving students aged 2-19 with Special Educational Needs. Each day our students bring their own unique energy into their school. In turn we ensure that they receive a high quality educational provision delivered through the immensely capable and effective hands of our staff.

The site itself presents a safe and welcoming environment with students placed in one of four settings:

  • Nursery
  • Primary
  • Secondary: Key Stage 3 and 14-19 years

We recognise that adopting a personalised approach is a critical key for each student’s development. Therefore we invest a significant amount of time assessing the student’s needs – an assessment that ensures we respond in the most specific manner. This approach is repeated throughout their time with us.

Personal independence is quite rightly an aim for each of our students. Therefore, in and out of classrooms we pride ourselves in adopting an approach that accelerates the development of life skills and enhances communication techniques. In parallel, we ensure that each student is taught the appropriate national curriculum subjects, as well as literacy and numeracy skills.

We may well be one of the largest schools of its type in England but rest assured that each student is extremely well known by the adults in their class. The appropriate mix of safety, care and challenge is delivered to each student, every single day that they attend Milestone Academy.

Principal: Sarah Goosani
