Job overview

Teacher of  Design & Technology

Full-time, permanent.

Required for September 2018

Darwen Vale High School is an Aldridge Academy and as such, part of the national multi academy trust. At a more local level we are part of the North West Cluster of schools that includes 2 other secondary schools and 1 primary school.

We have outstanding facilities and in September 2012 the school moved into its award winning new school building which retained the iconic frontage of the old Grammar school whilst providing state-of-the-art modern facilities.

In our Ofsted inspection in November we were judged to be RI. This matched our own self-evaluation. The Ofsted team commented, “Leaders, Governors and the trust are taking appropriate action to change the direction of the school.”

As our numbers grow, we need an inspirational Teacher of Design & Technology to deliver high quality lessons to pupils across years 7 -11. There is the opportunity to teach A Level or primary at our partner schools within the cluster.

We  are looking for a dedicated teacher who has the drive and passion of Design & Technology to pass onto the pupils. We welcome  applications from all the suite of technology subjects, but the applicant must be able to deliver all of the different areas at KS3. Applications are welcome from both NQTs (possible July start), and experienced teachers. There is the possibility of additional  responsibilities with appropriate remuneration for the right candidate.

We can offer:

State of the art modern facilities.

Great location; straight off Junction 4 of the M65 and within a 30 minute commute for most places in Manchester and Lancashire.

CPD opportunities, including working with a partner school, DACA, DAES or Sudell Primary School.

Closing date for applications is: 12.00 noon, Monday 30th April 2018.

Interviews will take place w/c 7th May.

If you would like to discuss the position further, please contact Mr M Little on 07930 451881

Aldridge Education is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. References will be taken up for all shortlisted applicants, and successful candidates will be subject to  satisfactory enhanced DBS disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Darwen Vale High School

Darwen Vale’s original predecessor school, Darwen Higher Grade School, was opened 1894 and in 1929 became Darwen Grammar School. The school moved to its current location in 1938 and continued until 1972 when, under the reorganisation of the education system across the country, it became Darwen Vale High School. The school was named a specialist Engineering College under the 2002 Specialist Schools Programme in England.

The present school buildings were opened in 2012 following a £24million revamp under the Building Schools for the Future programme. The site had been closed for two years while large sections of the original structure were demolished and rebuilt. The existing front of the building was retained and cleaned up to keep the character of the old Grammar School. During the rebuilding process the school was relocated to the vacant former site of Darwen Moorland High School.

The school has strong links to its community, a focus on a providing a safe, secure and caring environment, and a clear vision of looking forward whilst building on the strong traditions of the previous schools.

In December 2013 the Department for Education (DfE) issued an Academy Order on the school naming Aldridge Education as its preferred sponsor and established an Interim Executive Board (IEB) to replace the Governing Body following the recommendation of Ofsted that an external review of governance be undertaken. Following a consultation in June 2014 the DfE confirmed the Academy conversion. The conversion was completed and Darwen Vale High School became an academy sponsored by Aldridge Education in December 2014.

Since conversion to academy status the school has shown a strong improvement in GCSE results. The overall percentage of students obtaining 5 + GCSEs at A*-C  EM* was up by 14% points to 52% with a significant rise in the numbers of passes at the top A* and A grades.

STEM and engineering continue to be priorities for the school going forward.
