Job overview

Teacher of Design and Technology, with possibility of Lead Teacher of Textiles (JANUARY 2023 START) – South Island School

Key Responsibilities

South Island School seeks to appoint an outstanding Teacher of Design and Technology. Whilst we would welcome applicants of all profiles, a specialism in teaching Textiles would be a definite advantage. The role of Lead Teacher of Textiles (TLR4) could potentially be available for the right applicant: please make it clear within your letter of application if you also wish to be considered for this additional leadership role.

The ability to teach both Textiles and Food Design is essential; furthermore, since all teachers in the faculty teach a range of design disciplines within the MYP years, experience of other design disciplines would also be desirable. You may also be required to teach an Interdisciplinary subject within the MYP as part of your timetable.

The successful applicant will be a highly skilled teacher, with the ability to motivate, inspire and engage with students in creative and innovative ways, both within and outside the classroom. Previous experience of IBMYP Design, IGCSE Textiles and BTEC Art and Design (Textiles) would be helpful, though this is not essential for an applicant with the right overall skills set. Like all staff, you will additionally be a tutor within our Pastoral Learning Curriculum (PLC), and will be expected to contribute effectively to our Values in Action and Making a Difference extra-curricular programmes.

The position will be a full-time renewable contract for an initial two year period from January 2023, as per the ESF Terms and Conditions .

Within the Design Faculty

  • As a Teacher within the Design Faculty, you will be expected to:
  • Have the confidence to teach a range of courses across year groups within the Design Faculty in additional disciplines such as Food, Product Design and Digital Design;
  • Demonstrate a high level of knowledge and understanding relating to relevant aspects of design disciplines, including digital processes;
  • Ideally have knowledge and understanding of 3D modelling software such as TinkerCAD or Fusion 360 and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator/Photoshop), as well as experience of basic coding using micro-controllers;
  • Have an open minded and flexible approach to teaching and learning, showing a desire to develop professional knowledge and skills;
  • Have the ability to work as part of a team and the willingness to help develop new resources within the Faculty;
  • Have an awareness of current educational developments in Design and Technology education worldwide.

The Leading Teacher Role

If you are also appointed as Leading Teacher of Textiles, you will be a member of the Academic Leadership Team (ALT), a role which involves ensuring that Textiles is represented appropriately in collaborative academic decisions. You will report to the Head of the Design Faculty, who line-manages the leading teachers for each individual design discipline. You will be a skilled manager and leader, as you work with colleagues towards our overall goal of ensuring excellent educational outcomes for all of our students. The role carries an additional TLR4 allowance for leadership, as per the ESF Terms and Conditions .

The Leading Teacher of Textiles at SIS is expected to be committed and flexible. Regular duties include:

  • Leading the Textiles curriculum strategically, to develop and sustain high standards and a culture of collaboration and learning;
  • Working with colleagues who teach Textiles, to facilitate high achievement and efficiency across all facets of the department;
  • Representing the subject within the Academic Leadership Team (ALT), attending meetings and leading whole school initiatives as required;
  • Overseeing the planning, development and evaluation of Textiles schemes of learning for all courses to maximise positive outcomes;
  • Maintaining a learning climate that is inclusive and safe, yet challenging and innovative, ensuring appropriate differentiation to meet the needs of students with all learning profiles;
  • Leading and managing the development of learning and teaching strategies for Textiles, ensuring staff develop innovative and effective pedagogical expertise, facilitating appropriate development opportunities for colleagues as necessary;
  • Ensuring that resources are managed effectively within the department, in compliance with school-wide and foundation-wide requirements relating to budgets, procurement processes and facilities management;
  • Ensuring appropriate assessment practices for Textiles, to support student progress and attainment;
  • Ensuring regular celebration of students’ achievements in Textiles in liaison with the communications team;
  • Working as a tutor for a group of students, within the Pastoral Learning Curriculum;
  • Engaging actively with the Values in Action and Making a Difference extra-curricular programmes, ensuring that Textiles-related activities are represented appropriately within these curricula.

Requirements

  • A relevant degree and postgraduate qualification, including internationally recognised teaching qualifications;
  • A strong commitment to taking an inclusive approach to meet the needs of all students;
  • The ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with teachers and other relevant professionals, parents and students;
  • An understanding of current developments in teaching;
  • Experience of a range of assessment strategies for identifying students’ needs and supporting learning;
  • A commitment to pastoral care within the school;
  • A commitment to developing students’ skills through extra-curricular opportunities.
