The successful candidate will be a committed and enthusiastic teacher who possesses the ability to inspire and motivate students of all abilities. They should be a strong practitioner in Design and Technology who is prepared to contribute to a friendly and hardworking team and to play a part in promoting the subject throughout the school. They will draw on the latest resources and teaching methods in delivering Design and Technology from Y7 to Y11 both at the St Paul's campus and as an extracurricular offering. This role would suit someone with skills across the Design Technology spectrum, in particular, Product Design. A willingness to offer support to other aspects of the extracurricular life of the school, including boarding, is assumed.

The Design Technology Department comprises an experienced team of six specialist teachers across the St Pauls and St Martins campus and they teach Design Technology to pupils from Y7 to Y13. The department has two full time technicians to support staff and pupils. All colleagues work well within the team but also contribute to the wider curriculum within the schools. The SES Head of Department oversees the academic structure across St Pauls and St Martins.

The department is very fortunate to have received a great deal of support and investment over recent years. It is very well resourced with numerous practical workshops, a graphics studios, CAD/ CAM Studio, and Textile studios. The workshops/studios are well equipped and pupils have the opportunity to work in all main material groups.

The department is a happy, friendly and successful department, with a very good range of resources, and has a strong reputation in national competitions. We currently very successful with the Arkwright Scholarship and have a good record of securing pupils in top Design degree courses.

Design Technology is taught as a compulsory subject in Year 7 and Year 8. In Year 9 pupils can choose to study Design Technology as one of their options subjects, with the subject proving to be extremely popular. Pupils experience a variety of materials and processes and are always encouraged to develop creativity and individuality in their practical work. A large emphasis is placed on practical skills in these year groups, allowing pupils to develop their understanding of materials. Uptake at GCSE is healthy with pupils following the AQA Design Technology specification (Product Design) and Edexcel Design Technology specification (Textile Design). At ALevel pupils follow the AQA Product Design and Fashion & Textile specifications.

The Schools are part of the great heritage of Stamford and a symbol of its vibrancy and evolution. The Schools have been established in Stamford since 1532, providing a first class education for children. Today the Schools remain interwoven with Stamford life, to which our students, teachers and parents contribute greatly. At Stamford we have one simple and overriding aim, that is to inspire our students and light fires within them.

The schools educate 1650 pupils at the Stamford Junior School for children aged 2-11, Stamford School for students aged 11-16, and Stamford Sixth Form for students aged 16-18.

This is a really exciting time to be joining the School as after nearly 500 years as a boys’ school and 200 years as a girls’ school, we have joined together as a fully co-educational school. This restructure is giving us the opportunity to look at all aspects of school life with fresh eyes, and we are looking at everything from how we provide the best possible pastoral care to how we shape the timetable, how we make best use of our estate, to how AI can support classroom learning. It is a big change, but a once in a generation opportunity to really set up the School for the next hundred years.

After this positive change, stamfordians will still be able to leave here poised for success in the real world - quietly confident, kind, positive, hardworking, unassuming and resilient. We are independent schools nurturing independent minds.

"I love the idea of preparing our kids from the school room to the boardroom in the 21st century, wherever that boardroom is in a rainforest in Brazil or as a CEO or working with a charity in India. Just as we have a big responsibility, so will they. I want them not just to be content to live in the world but to change it. Exciting!”

Principal, Will Phelan
