Job overview

It is an exciting time to join the Expressive Arts department at Westminster Academy. We are committed to developing young people through the arts; in the last two years we have increased Expressive Arts provision and engaged more and more students through outstanding opportunities thanks to the relentless energy, industry knowledge and infectious enthusiasm of staff. We are now looking for an innovative Drama teacher to join this dynamic team.

Westminster Academy is an Outstanding International Business and Enterprise academy and International Baccalaureate World School serving a multi-ethnic community in Central London. Our ethos is grounded in the IB Learner Profile; we encourage intellectual curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit and foster a real sense of communal endeavour. The Academy has gained national recognition for its work to improve outcomes for students, and its aspirational and inclusive vision. As a member of the WA community you will have the opportunity to shape the future of the Academy whilst working alongside an exceptionally talented group of teachers and leaders.

We are proud that our Key Stage 3 curriculum allows every Year 7 and 8 student to study Drama, Art, Dance, Music and Food every week. Drama focuses on developing students’ confidence and creativity at Key Stage 3, giving an insight into different theatre genres and bringing characters to life on stage. At Key Stage 4 students further enhance their skill set, studying practitioners such as Brecht and Stanislavski and learning about the roles of a director and designer to help them approach the components of the GCSE course. The department has developed practical assessments that challenge students to create really unique performances, which students have the chance to showcase throughout the year.

The Drama teacher is closely supported by the Expressive Arts team at Westminster Academy, all playing an integral role in promoting wellbeing and developing students’ character through extra-curricular provision and productions. Performance opportunities offered throughout the year are a collaboration of all five Expressive Arts subjects, helping students form friendships across year groups and increase confidence in expressing themselves, as well as developing an appreciation of the arts and further embedding a culture of Expressive Arts at the Academy. Performances culminate in our summer musical; we are currently planning our 2019 production following the success of Hairspray and Bugsy Malone.

Beyond the building, the department eagerly takes advantage of opportunities with external link organisations for student development in their subject pathway. In the past year Drama opportunities have included a RADA workshop, creative writing with a BBC scriptwriter and Olivier Award nominee, plus theatre visits to the Lyric, Playhouse and the West End, inspiring excitement around the subject and a love of live performance.

Our ambitious team are looking to continue building on the success of the department and further improve outcomes. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, driven, and an excellent classroom practitioner who is committed to student success and development. There may be the opportunity for an additional responsibility for the right candidate. Experience of planning and delivering GCSE lessons is essential, as the job will involve working closely with all colleagues within the department to continue developing our existing provision. The willingness to contribute to extra-curricular activities is also desirable. If you can offer an absolute focus on raising educational standards coupled with a passion for learning, then Westminster Academy would like to hear from you.

What we offer:

● An excellent programme of continuing professional development

● The chance to shape the future of the subject in collaboration with the leadership team, external education professionals and exam boards

● The opportunity to develop personally and professionally, including mentors for NQTs, structured performance management and opportunities to advance to positions of greater responsibility

● A commitment to staff well being, including access to the local gym, weekly fitness sessions, staff social events and the end of term ‘WA Big Breakfast’

● Perkbox membership, which offers a package of benefits for staff such as retail discounts, savings on gym membership, cinema tickets and free mobile phone insurance
