Job overview

TEACHER of DRAMA (Maternity Cover)

Cranleigh seeks to appoint, for January 2021, a well-qualified full-time teacher of Drama for 2 terms of maternity cover to teach Year 9, GCSE and A level Drama in a highly successful, innovative, friendly and well supported department.  We would welcome applicants with specialisms in any area of theatre from performance or any technical discipline.  The role would suit an experienced teacher in current employment or returning to the profession following time away.

Cranleigh aspires to be a beacon of excellence in learning and teaching and is committed to the continuing professional development of all employees.

Cranleigh is a leading fully co-educational independent boarding and day Senior School consisting of around 690 girls and boys of 13 – 18 years of age.  There is also a Preparatory School on the opposite side of the road which has around 343 girls and boys

The department teaches the EDUQAS Specification for both GCSE and A Level so a working knowledge of this specification as well as the following texts would be beneficial but not necessarily essential: “Warhorse”, “The Woman In Black”, “The Trojan Women”, “Accidental Death Of An Anarchist” and “The Curious Incident Of The Dog And The Night Time”.  The successful candidate will have a passion for Drama and be driven to challenge the thinking and creativity of the students both in and out of the classroom.

The ideal candidate will be flexible, adaptable, innovative and a good team-player.

A willingness to be fully involved in the co-curricular life of a busy boarding school is essential including acting as an academic tutor to a group of students and undertaking duty supervision in a boarding house one evening a week. There may be the opportunity to Direct/Co-Direct a full scale production during the placement.

Please read ‘Why teach at Cranleigh?’ on our website, which gives an impression of the ethos to which it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss any aspect of the post informally, please get in touch with Jonathon Scott, Director of Drama by email in the first instance: JONS@cranleigh.org

The appointment is from January 2021, for two terms in the first instance, with the potential for this to be extended.

Cranleigh has its own salary scales significantly above the maintained sector and the successful applicant will be offered a salary commensurate with their qualifications and experience. Accommodation is available if required.

Further details and an application form are available on the School website:

www.cranleigh.org/welcome/work-at-cranleigh

Candidates are requested to submit to the Headmaster a brief letter of application, together with a completed application form supported by a full CV, as soon as possible and no later than 9.30 am on Tuesday 6th October 2020.

Candidates should state fully what their particular interests are and where they think they can make contributions to the wider life of the School.

Applications will be considered as they are received and the vacancy may therefore close earlier than advertised and should be sent to:

The Headmaster, Cranleigh School, Horseshoe Lane, Cranleigh, Surrey, GU6 8QQ or via email to recruiting@cranleigh.org

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  The post holder will be subject to a DBS check.

Cranleigh is a leading co-educational weekly boarding and day school set in a stunning rural location in more than 280 acres on the edge of the Surrey Hills. In 2015 the School celebrated its 150th anniversary; it has come a long way since its establishment as a school to support the local farming community in 1865.

Cranleigh’s beautiful campus is exceptionally well equipped, with outstanding classrooms, studio, performance and sports facilities, including three theatres, twelve rehearsal and performance spaces, competition pitches, equestrian centre, sports centres, golf course, outdoor education centre and swimming pool.

There are strong links between the School and nearby Cranleigh Preparatory School and pupils also join from a wide variety of other prep schools across London and the home counties, creating a lively, House-based community of young people who are drawn together by their inherent love of life and getting involved in everything Cranleigh has to offer.

In 2015 the newest addition to the Cranleigh family also celebrated a birthday. Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, situated at the heart of Saadiyat Island, the Emirates’ island of culture, opened its doors to the first pupils at the Junior School in 2014. Like the other Schools in the Cranleigh family, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi shares the motto Ex Cultu Robur (from Culture comes Strength), an ethos which celebrates co-curricular success alongside academic excellence with remarkable results for every pupil, year on year.

Location
Cranleigh’s 280 acre site, situated eight miles from Guildford near the Surrey - West Sussex border, is part of Cranleigh Village and within forty-five minutes of London.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports are within easy access; there is a fast, regular train service from Guildford to Waterloo.
