Job overview

King Edward’s School is seeking to appoint a part-time Economics and Business teacher to join an exciting, positive and forward-looking department in an exceptional School.  Candidates should be willing to help with current activities and to share new ideas.  The department’s staff have considerable experience and so plenty of support is available to help a colleague who is new to the IB or who is less familiar with some aspects of the syllabus.  We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, and no experience of working in the independent sector is required.  This role will be offered on a one-year contract initially.

The Economics and Business Department

Both Economics and Business Management are taught post-16 as part of the International Baccalaureate.  Both subjects are very popular and the department is growing in terms of pupil numbers.  This year we have over 70 boys in Year 12 (‘Divisions’) studying with us; this means that the majority of boys who join the IB choose to study one or other of our disciplines.

Lessons run for either a single period (40 minutes) or a double period (80 minutes).  The Economics course covers macro, micro, international and development economics.  The Business Management course comprises a general introduction to business followed by units on human resources, marketing, finance, and operations.

The department’s results are strong with the majority of boys scoring a grade 6 or 7 since the introduction of the IB.

Although our formal teaching is with boys aged 16 and over, we nonetheless have considerable contact with boys in lower and middle school through our involvement in sports, enrichment activities, the house system, PSHE and our promotion of competitions that develop business and economic awareness by the younger boys in the school.

The department currently has four teachers.  Typically, we work across both disciplines, and so the successful applicant will be required to teach higher level and standard level units in both Economics and Business Management.

As a department, we are committed to making learning an engaging and interactive experience for our boys.  Our intention is to make increasing use of virtual learning environments, and the successful applicant should be enthusiastic to make use of the potential that technology offers.  The department runs a varied programme of additional activities for boys through the use of visiting speakers, trips to local businesses and national conferences, a popular Economics and Business society, and participation in national competitions such as the Investor Challenge.  Our aim is always to encourage boys to love learning and to be excited to explore the subjects that we ourselves are so passionate about.
