Job overview

Teacher of Economics

We are looking to appoint an exceptional Teacher of Economics with excellent subject knowledge and a commitment to sharing their passion for the subject with students, many of whom look to pursue Economics-related courses at leading universities. Whilst the position is principally to teach Economics, it is expected that the successful candidate will support the department in also delivering some teaching of Business Studies A Level.

The successful candidate will join a strong and experienced department which also offers courses in GCSE and A Level Business Studies and the BTEC Extended Diploma in Business.

This post would suit an innovative, energetic and ambitious teacher of Economics wishing to contribute to the development of the department. Applications are welcome from candidates at all stages in their careers, with a full and recognised induction programme in place which, for NQTs, will lead to QTS.

The Economics and Business Department

The Department consists of four teachers reporting to the Head of Economics and Business. Economics is offered as an A Level option for students, and is generally a very popular choice. Recent external examination results have been very positive; over the past two years, more than 80% of the students taking Economics or Business at A Level have gained grades within the A*-B bracket, with a number proceeding to study Economics/Business-related courses at degree level at Russell Group universities.

The following specifications are followed by the department:

· GCSE Business (AQA)

· A Level Business (Pearson)

· A Level Economics (OCR)

The department is far from complacent, and is determined to implement strategies that will ensure that standards are consistently high. This represents an exciting challenge, and the right candidate will play an important role in supporting the Head of Department and the team in exploring and evaluating new and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Duties:

At Cokethorpe School, teachers are expected to:

· Inspire a love of Economics in pupils, based on excellent subject knowledge and innovative, creative teaching techniques.

· Be accountable for the progress made by pupils, both in terms of internal and external communications – for example, through Progress Review Evenings and written reports.

· Develop strategies to support pupils in becoming independent and effective learners.

· Work with the Head of Department to promote the Economics and Business Department, organising extra-curricular experiences to stretch and challenge all pupils. The School takes part in the Young Enterprise Programme.

· Play a full and committed role in the development of the whole learning experience of pupils within the school, including participation in tutoring, the AOB programme and, if appropriate, Games.

· Take part in, and, where appropriate, contribute to a full and varied Professional Development Programme.

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
