Established almost 500 years ago, the College of Richard Collyer is forward thinking in every way – we are a Beacon College and were rated Outstanding by Ofsted at our last inspection.  Our mission is simple: to deliver the best possible education to our 2,000 students aged 16 to 19, and our achievements speak for themselves – in 2019, our A level high grade rate was 58% and value added (DfE Performance Measures – Progress) placed us as the top state provider in West Sussex and the third best sixth form college in the country.  BTEC results are also excellent, with 85% high grades in 2019 (top 25% nationally for Alps), and have been a pilot college for the introduction of a select offer of T-Levels.

Education & Childcare is a high performing subject within the Faculty of Business. We deliver the innovative Cache T-level Education & Childcare course as well as the Cache Level 2 Award in Child Development & Care.  The successful applicant will be required to mainly contribute to the teaching of the new and dynamic T-level course and assess students’ vocational competency in Industry Placements. There may also be the possibility of teaching some content in the Level 2 course. Applications would be welcomed from both experienced and newly qualified teachers.

Qualifications: Candidates should hold a good classification in an appropriate subject related degree, together with a recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DET). Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA), or equivalent qualification, is desirable.

Experience: Current or recent experience of delivering Level 3 Education & Childcare qualifications to 16-19 year olds or experience of working in a sector related setting is desirable. Assessing students’ vocational competency in Industry Placement is desirable, but not essential.

Knowledge and Skills: A sound understanding of the Education & Childcare sector and the ability to contribute to the teaching and assessing of the subject in college and in the workplace. A willingness to develop knowledge of the wider topics specific to the T-Level Core qualification. Candidates should also possess the ability to apply their own practical experience in Early Years settings and have sound skills in using information technology to support teaching and learning.

Personal Qualities: Excellent teamwork and communication skills.  Flexible approach and well organised work patterns.

Motivation and Expectations: A commitment to high standards to motivate, support and encourage the growth and maturing of students to ensure excellent outcomes, both in the classroom and in the workplace.

Within the Faculty of Business, Education & Childcare students study either the Cache T-Level Early Years Occupational Specialism or the Cache Level 2 Award in Child Development & Care. T-Level students are taught in college for 3 blocks over 3 days, totalling 13 hours per week, with a further 2 days of Industry Placement training.  Level 2 students study 1 block, 4 hours 20 minutes, of subject content and 1 block of Studentship skills. This full time teaching post would require teaching 5 blocks per week.

There are currently 9 T-Level students in our first year cohort, with an anticipated group of up to 20 starting in September 2021. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering outstanding teaching and assessment to both year groups within the T-Level; ensuring students reach their maximum potential. They must have a clear understanding of the importance of raising achievement and the ability to use a range of strategies to achieve this.

The Education & Childcare department comprises of two full time and one part time teacher, supported by an Industry Placement co-ordinator/technician, who organises Industry Placements, supports class teachers and assists during practical sessions. The department has excellent facilities, including the use of a suite of laptops, a kitchen area and a wide range of practical resources to support the delivery of activity planning sessions.

The teaching team currently follow a unified scheme of work. Delivery of content comprises of student notes, discussions, Cache e-presentations, home-works, in class tests and Industry Placement assessments. Contribution to the planning and creation of teaching materials is strongly encouraged in all teaching staff.

Collyer’s is committed to the professional development of all staff. Staff are encouraged to attend external CPD as well as in-house training events.

Members of the teaching staff are usually also personal tutors.  Tutors monitor progress and offer support and guidance to 25 students during a one hour session per week.

Salary range: On the new SFCA salary scale £25,570 (Point 1) to £41,732 (Point 9)

The College of Richard Collyer in Horsham, ‘Collyer’s’, is one of the leading sixth form colleges in the country and the no.1 choice for A Levels in West Sussex. The College has an attractive campus, and classrooms are well resourced, with ambitious plans for growth in the coming years that have already started. There is a collegiate and professional ethos amongst staff and students within which excellent teaching and learning can flourish.

The College has a long history of commitment to education whilst also seeking to remain forward thinking. It was founded as a school nearly five hundred years ago under the terms of the will of a prominent member of the Mercers’ Company in the City of London. Ever since, the Mercers’ Company and the Parish of Horsham have been involved in its governance and are represented on the Governing Body. In 1976, Collyer’s became a sixth form college and remains a designated sixth form college and a full member of the Sixth Form Colleges’ Association and the Association of Colleges.

The College provides education for over 2,350 young people in the 16–19 age range. Around half of each year’s intake comes from the three partner 11–16 schools in Horsham: Forest, Millais and Tanbridge House. Many others come from a wide range of schools which are further afield, including the independent as well as the maintained sectors. Collyer’s has a very successful and consistent record in external examinations. In 2023, the A Level high grade rate (A*–B) was 61%. Results across our other course types, such as vocational, technical, transition and GCSE, are equally strong. Collyer’s also runs Adult Education and Skills courses in the evenings, with over 300 students studying a range of professional and recreational adult learning courses ranging from art to accounting.

Collyer’s is situated near the centre of Horsham, within easy reach of the town centre and railway station. We currently employ 112 teachers and 105 support staff, each with a mix of full-time and part-time posts. The College is organised for teaching into three Faculties; nearly all teachers also act as personal tutors for up to 24 students organised into six houses led by a Head of House. The majority of our students take A Level or vocational Level 3 courses and go on to further and higher study or employment. Intermediate Level courses, including BTEC Level 2 and GCSE, are also offered. A wide range of enrichment activities, Performing Arts, Sport and Recreation are recommended to provide a broad and balanced programme for students.

Support staff provide vital services for the effective running of the college in Administration, Finance, HR, Information and Learning Technology, Curriculum Support, Library, Catering and Premises.
