Job overview

An outstanding teacher of English is required for September 2025. The School has a long-standing record of high academic achievement (95% of A-level entries gained A* to B grades in 2024). There is also much happening in terms of co-curricular activities, and all staff are expected to be fully involved in School life.

English is a flourishing department with seven full time teachers and two part-time, and aims to develop a culture of reading, critical curiosity and literary enthusiasm in all pupils. Pupils are taught a broad range of texts in Years 6 to 9, building reading and writing skills for GCSE, in advance of studying for CIE IGCSEs in English Language and Literature at the end of Year 11. English is a growing choice for A level and pupils regularly go on to high-tariff universities to study both English and English in joint honours; in 2025, 6 of 8 of the schools prospective Oxbridge candidates for English/joint honours have been offered places - a testament to the excellent quality of teaching and learning at the heart of the Department. Specific year groups to be taught are yet to be determined, but the post will involve teaching across the range of key stages, from the Lower School (Years 6 to 9) to GCSE and A level classes.

We aspire to attract a staff that matches the social and cultural diversity of the CLS community. We welcome applications from anyone with the relevant skills and abilities, and particularly from those who may not previously have thought of applying to a school such as ours. We use CV Minder to anonymise applications.

CLS was named by the Sunday Times as London Independent Secondary School of the Year 2020, and occupies fine, modern buildings near St. Pauls Cathedral overlooking the Thames, opposite the Tate Modern. There are impressive off-site sports facilities in south east London.

It is a top priority for the School that we both attract and retain a staff body that is not only excellent, but also reflects the London community within which we live, and our diverse pupil body. As such, it is of paramount importance to the School that we acknowledge our current imbalance and seek to rectify this. We are therefore particularly keen to encourage applications from candidates who have African Caribbean, Asian or other Minority Ethnic or mixed heritage. All appointments are merit-based, following a fair, transparent recruitment process. In accordance with the Equality Act 2010, however, the School may employ positive action where diverse candidates demonstrate the ability to perform the role equally well.

City of London School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Further information about the School and a copy of the most recent ISI Inspection report are available on the school website.

We reserve the right to appoint before this deadline and encourage early submission.

Closing date: 9am 26 February 2025.

Interviews will be held on 6 March 2025.
