Job overview

Straits Education International Group (SEIG)

Straits Education International Group is a relatively new comer to the Education sector in Malaysia. We opened our first school in Penang in 2011 and another in Rawang (KL) in 2018. We are a fast-paced and growing company with plans to build schools in Malacca, Klang, Kota Kinabalu and finally to other ASEAN countries. As a school, we pride ourselves on the level of care we give to our students. The motto, ‘Not for me, Not for you, But for us,’ really captures what we are trying to do; we aim to combine academic rigour with a key sense of kindness, personal responsibility and determination to overcome challenges. Our schools have a wide range of resources and support to enhance our students’ success.

We are now recruiting for the following position:

English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher – must be confident in teaching KS3 to KS5. Experience of teaching low level learners is required. An English Language Teaching qualification (CELTA or equivalent) is an advantage.

Straits International School, Rawang

At SIS, Rawang, we offer a challenging curriculum for all 280 students from Nursery to IGCSE (pre-university coming soon). We have a growth mindset, embrace the diversity of our community, and endeavour to challenge the minds of our students.

At SIS we strive to have an aspirational culture that encourages students to realise their own gifts and talents. It is our responsibility to nurture and guide every individual. The school's welcoming, family atmosphere is grounded in the commitment to ambition, courage, integrity, openness and respect.

The quality of life in KL is very high and offers a wide range of activities and food to try. KL has long served as the link between Asia’s great kingdoms and an important outlet to the markets of Europe and the Middle East. With English widely spoken, Malaysia is often referred to as ‘easy Asia’; you can stroll through streets filled with exceptional art, amazing cafes and interesting shops or conversely, you can visit one of the many malls that house stores from the UK, Australia and the US. It is voted as one of the top ten places in the world to live!

Our salaries are competitive, and our staff have good savings potential. Apartments are provided and the quality of life here is excellent. We believe that everyone should enjoy coming to school.

In joining our fast-paced international environment, you will lead the delivery of the National Curriculum, IGCSE and finally the A level programmes (CIE accredited). You will challenge your students to set ambitious targets for themselves and seek out and implement innovative teaching practices to enhance the student experience and outcomes.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced and motivated English as an Additional (EAL) teacher to teach KS3 to KS4. Experience of teaching low level learners is required as the job entails teaching an intensive (25 contact hours/week) EAL course to beginners and elementary level students. The course has two main components: core English and Academic Vocabulary and Skills sessions. The aim of the course is to provide basic English language and Academic Skills to learners with low levels of English before they join the mainstream school, where they have to be able to access the wider Secondary curriculum in English.

SIS staff work hard, stay flexible and are resilient in the face of challenges. We value staff who will do all they can to push the school forward, be proactive and have the interests of our wonderful students at heart. In return, they will find fantastic children, the personal freedom to be innovative in what they teach and the trust to help develop the school and shape its future.

About you

Able to create a secondary culture where there are no limits to what can be achieved, you will have a degree, a secondary teaching qualification plus considerable teaching experience and knowledge of the curriculum. An English Language Teaching qualification (CELTA or equivalent) is an advantage. Receptive to feedback and ready to embrace change, you will be keen to lead best practice with colleagues and peers.

A strong ambassador for the school, you will be able to develop new ways to engage students and parents with the wider school and Straits International School community. Your strong motivation and communication skills will also enable you to create a feeling of energy, excitement and personal investment within the classroom and throughout your subject area. You will also be able to meet visa-related restrictions (including a minimum of 3 years teaching experience is a must to meet the Malaysian immigration visa requirements).

Selection Process

The closing date for application is April 3rd 2020 but we reserve the right to appoint early for the right candidate. First round interviews will take place via Skype with the Head of Secondary while the shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the Head of Secondary, the EAL Coordinator and the Principal.

Please send your letter of application along with your CV to the Head of Secondary, Ms. Harriet Glover (h.glover@sisgroup.edu.my) and ‘cc’ our Principal, Mr. Stephen Willoughby (swilloughby@sisgroup.edu.my) into the email.

Start Date: August 2020

Straits International School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all the students in our care and expects all applicants to share this commitment.
