Job overview

The English Department currently consists of 9 members of full-time and part-time staff.   It is an outstanding department and one of the most successful in the school.   The team is well led and examination results are excellent.  The successful candidate will join a very successful English department.

2018 results in English saw students obtaining 100% pass rate at A-level. At GCSE, 80% of students gained a grade 9 - 4 in English Literature and more than 80% in English Language.

The school operates an inclusive examination entry policy and all pupils at Key Stage 4 are entered for both English Language and Literature. Staff teach the entire age and ability range in this 11 – 18 all ability school.  At Key Stage 4 we follow AQA courses. At Key Stage 5 we deliver both AQA English Literature and English Language and Literature courses.

Media is offered as an option at KS4 and KS5, with members of the English department providing lessons. Media, which benefits from being taught in subject-specific classrooms, is a popular choice and results at GCSE and A Level are also good. There is opportunity for the successful candidate to teach this subject at both GCSE and A level. The OCR specifications are taught at KS4 and KS5.

The English Department works closely as a team and work in a great spirit of co-operation and mutual support.  They are proud of the pupils’ achievements; the range of extra-curricular activities they offer and their standing within the school community.

The English Department is based in a suite of rooms in the main teaching block.   The department has a good stock of texts and all rooms have interactive whiteboards.  The department has laptops available for pupil use and also makes use of class sets of iPads.

Extra-curricular projects include entering public speaking competitions, creative writing competitions and an English department book blog. Pupils at KS5 are offered the opportunity to attend lectures and theatre trips to enhance their knowledge of texts studied.
