Job overview

We are seeking to appoint, from September 2022, an inspiring, committed and enthusiastic Teacher of English to join an outward-looking and high achieving faculty.  The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher, passionate about their subject, and must be willing to contribute to the wider life of the school.

Every year we advertise several additional responsibilities internally to our teaching staff and it is likely that ahead of September 2022 there will be the opportunity to apply for middle leadership responsibilities in either the pastoral or the extra-curricular life of the school for teachers of any subject specialism.  Experienced colleagues who feel they have relevant experience or are ready for the next challenge should make this clear in their supporting statement.  However, this teaching vacancy is equally suitable for Early Career Teachers who will be fully supported by a comprehensive induction programme.

The Faculty

The English Faculty at Bury Grammar School is a thriving team of nine members of staff, including the Head of Faculty and Heads of English Language and Literature.  We work together to nurture excellent results from the young people we teach; in 2019 our pupils achieved exceptional standards at GCSE and A level, with over one in three grades awarded at grades A*, 9 or 8 at GCSE.  We are committed to enabling our pupils to benefit from the very best standards of teaching and are proud of our Faculty culture of collaboration.  Our forward-looking curriculum provides all pupils with a strong grounding in literary and linguistic study, enabling them to become confident communicators and informed critical thinkers.  Our pupils are a pleasure to teach; they enjoy their English lessons and make excellent progress, with English Language and Literature both popular choices at A Level.  The Faculty works closely with the School’s Librarians to nurture a reading culture throughout the School and to instil in our pupils a love of reading and of learning.  Beyond the classroom, the Faculty offers a wide range of opportunities for pupils to develop their skills and interests, including theatre trips and screenings, study days, author visits and much-anticipated National Poetry Day and World Book Day celebrations.  The English Faculty runs a broad range of extra-curricular clubs, including a wide range of reading and creative writing clubs, debating groups, academic workshops, and our own annual book award.

We look forward to welcoming a dedicated, talented and passionate teacher to our successful team.

About Bury Grammar School

Bury Grammar School is situated in the heart of Bury, Lancashire and is widely recognised as one of the top independent schools in the North West of England. Currently there are over 1270 girls and boys on roll.

Our School is a family of independent, selective, day schools for girls and boys aged 3 to 18, which combine a strong tradition of academic excellence with the best in modern educational practice. The School has a long and rich history of excellence extending back 450 years and our staff, pupils and alumni are proud of the School’s long-standing traditions. Our modern, inclusive School community welcomes students and staff from different faiths and cultures. It is the blend of the School’s traditions along with our modern ethos that is a source of great enrichment for the whole community and is what makes the School so special.

Every one of our pupils benefits enormously from belonging both to a small school, where they are known and nurtured as an individual, while at the same time being part of our BGS family of Schools which is able to offer a huge variety of educational experiences and an excellent learning environment. Through our unique blend of single-sex education from ages 7-16 and co-education in our Pre-School, Infant School and Sixth Form, we offer the ‘best of both worlds’ for our pupils at every stage of their educational journey. Our vibrant and rigorous curriculum is designed to engage and challenge our pupils whilst fostering an intellectual curiosity, which translates into impressive academic performance.

The School is led by our Principal, Jo Anderson, who is supported by a strong and dynamic senior management team and dedicated Board of Governors. We are a member of the Girls’ School Association (GSA) and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) and have been rated ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

One of our key strategic objectives is to maintain, recruit, nurture and develop first class teaching and support staff. You can be sure that as an employer we are focused on creating an outstanding workplace for all our staff so that we can attract, retain and engage talented individuals who have a desire to transform the lives of others.

A successful education is very much about team work and every member of staff at Bury Grammar School recognises that together we have the opportunity to change our pupils’ lives. Whether this is part of our fantastic catering team who provide our pupils with nutritious meals, our dedicated estates team who maintain our beautiful grounds or as a member of our inspiring teaching staff, everyone has an important part to play.
