Job overview

Malbank School & Sixth Form College

Teacher of English

Full Time, Temporary MPS/UPS

1 year contract in the first instance

Contract includes small group catch up work

Commencing 1st September 2021

The English and Media team are all highly skilled, enthusiastic and dedicated specialists who work together as a well-established team – sharing good practice, resources and team spirit.

• Our department is made up of mix of full time specialists and part time specialists. Within our team we have a rich mix of expertise in Drama, Media, Language, Literature,  and Opening Minds.

• At the core of our curriculum is the belief that every student has the right to success in English. We are constantly reviewing and revising our delivery of the curriculum in response to student voice, work scans, lesson observations, School Improvement Strategy Evaluation, exam data and new Government led initiatives such as new Curriculum Changes, particularly at GCSE and A level.

• Year 7 through to Year 11 are taught in ability bands and classes are set according to ability to ensure support for the progress groups and challenge at all levels.

• We have been following the new AQA course for GCSE from September 2015.  At A Level we study AQA Literature specification A and AQA English Language.

• We pride ourselves on our enrichment opportunities for all students including well-established trips to The Globe and other local theatres.

With a strong shared vision of learning moving into the new academic year, there is real potential to maximise our recent exam successes. Our main successes this year have been:

• Establishing the Accelerated Reader programme

• Strengthening our partnership with PiXl

• A new assessment policy across Key stage 3 and 4 using Doddle.

• Targeted intervention programmes across all Key Stages.

• Extra-Curricular enrichment opportunities

• Strengthening and sharing good practice through lesson sampling and shared observations.

• Developing the use of student voice to inform our curriculum and teaching

• 2019 GCSE results:

Achieving at least grade 4 in either English Language or Literature 78%

Achieving at least grade 5 in either English Language or Literature 64%

Achieving a grade 7 -9 in either English Language or Literature 23%

We will offer the successful candidate a warm welcome and genuine support.

• Our schemes of work ensure our energies are used in adapting a lesson for independent learning rather than having to plan one from scratch.

• Our focus on Assessment for Learning and our desire to incorporate exam style tasks across all units at KS3 ensures staff are consistent in a more guided approach to marking and we then use our findings to inform our teaching and future setting.

• Our team consists of GCSE exam markers which allows valuable insights into the assessment practice and marking ‘tips’.

• Our interactive workshops, enrichment opportunities and programmes of intervention have raised our profile meaning English is truly seen as a subject students are actively engaged with.

• Most importantly, we are a positive team who pull together to ensure our students enjoy our subject whilst maximising their success.

Our appointing the right candidate is of crucial importance to the School as a whole as well as to the English Department.

We need someone who is:

• A first-class English teacher, keen to teach across both Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 GCSE and possibly A level English Language and/or English Literature;

• Prepared to make contributions beyond the English classroom;

• Above all, ambitious for the students and the department, and actively supportive of the culture and values of the School.

This post would suit someone:

• Who really enjoys working with young people;

• Who has excellent inter-personal skills;

• Who has some understanding of curriculum issues in English and in respect of the wider curriculum;

• Who is organised, creative and reliable;

• Who has boundless energy and a good sense of humour!

How do I apply?

As well as completing the application form, please include a concise letter covering:

• How your experience and qualifications have equipped you for this post.

• Your approach to teaching and learning.

We look forward to receiving your application.

Send applications to: lcc@malbank.cheshire.sch.uk

Closing date for applications: 11th  March 2021 at noon.
