Rydal School was founded in 1885 by Thomas Osborn as a boys’ boarding school in the Methodist tradition. Penrhos College had been founded five years earlier, in 1880, by Thomas Payne as a girls’ boarding school, also in the Methodist tradition. In 1999, the two schools merged into a single foundation called Rydal Penrhos.

Rydal Penrhos offers education for boys and girls from age 2 to 18 years old. Our Methodist values strongly shape our perception of who we are as a school and what we should be. Therefore, we measure our performance on the individual improvement of each pupil and Value added. This focus on individuals rather than statistics allows our school to take an intentionally inclusive approach; our concern is less on being a certain kind of school than it is on creating a particular sort of person; the kind that can work for themselves while helping those around them, approaching the wider world with confidence, resilience and caring. This is the aim of our teaching, monitoring and support.

There is a rich extra-curricular programme of games, music, drama, art, and activities to support this ethos and the school’s idyllic location between the sea and the mountains means that sailing and outdoor education are important elements of this. Cultural, technical, community and creative options are also well represented.

The School currently numbers around 475. The school is a member of the Society of Heads of Independent Schools, the Independent Schools' Bursars Association, the Independent Association of Prep Schools and an associate member of the Methodist Independent Schools group.
