Job overview

The La Mare de Carteret high School are looking to appoint with effect from 24th April 2019 or earlier an enthusiastic, dynamic and well-qualified, specialist graduate teacher with the vision and energy to deliver high standards of teaching and learning in the English Department, and to make a full contribution to the ethos, identity and life of the School and to the Guernsey Federation of Secondary Schools.

About the Education Service

La Mare de Carteret high School currently operates as part of the Guernsey Federation of Secondary Schools which includes St Sampson’s, Les Beaucamps and Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form, alongside St Anne’s School in Alderney. Secondary and Post-16 education is undergoing a period of exciting change on the Island, which includes a planned new structure with one 11-18 all ability school on two sites.

The drivers in Secondary phase education for this significant transformation are: equality of educational experience and outcomes, equality of opportunity and access, and efficient and effective use of resources.

The person appointed will be employed by the States of Guernsey and will be based at La Mare de Carteret High School and will be required to maximise opportunities for collaborative working, teaching and learning across key stages and shared professional development across schools. There is an expectation that they will engage in cross-school initiatives which may require working on more than one site to meet the needs of the Education Service. The transition plans for the new structure may also mean you will work from an alternative site.

The post holder will be required to teach English throughout KS3 and KS4 across the ability range including GCSE in English Language and Literature.  The English Department attained very good examination results over the last 3 years with 91% of the Language grades Grade C and above .

The information provided by candidates will be used by the shortlisting panel when selecting candidates for interview.

Note - Internal applicants are required to inform their Line Manager before applying for any States of Guernsey positions. Internal references may be taken up prior to interview.

Appointment to this role will be subject to the following pre-employment checks which will be completed following an offer of employment:

  • Satisfactory references which must include one from the candidate's current line manager
  • Occupational Health Clearance
  • Satisfactory, Enhanced, Disclosure and Barring Service Check with Barred Listing Check.  Convictions likely to be considered relevant to this post include crimes involving, but not limited to, theft violence, dishonesty, fraud, vulnerable individuals and children
  • Confirmation of required qualifications / registrations
  • Possession of a valid Right to Work document

Should the successful applicant not meet the requirements sufficiently he/she may be appointed at a lower grade than stated. The successful applicant would then have the opportunity to progress to the grade advertised once the necessary skills and knowledge have been developed and the postholder has demonstrated the ability to undertake the duties at the higher level.
