The Holgate Academy are seeking a Teachers of English with a commitment to academic excellence and helping every learner succeed to teach across Key Stage 3 and 4, and to deliver innovative lessons which engage and challenge students to achieve their full potential.

The English department at Holgate is very strong team compromising of individuals that have a range of different experiences. We have members of the team that have worked in the academy for over twenty years, staff that are currently going through the ECT process and a large number somewhere in between. We work closely with ITT providers to support people in the early years of training too.

We are a team of teachers passionate about providing students with the opportunities to explore texts from a variety of different writers, backgrounds and experiences. Cultural capital is at the heart of our curriculum model. It is designed to support their knowledge and understanding of the world around them as well as encourage healthy and lively debates about topics that matter to them.

Each topic in key stage 3 ensures that students are exposed to religious, social, cultural and historical fiction and non-fiction texts and we offer a range of opportunities to reflect upon the knowledge discovered, debate current affairs and develop a personal response as a result. The curriculum is planned sequentially to build skills and knowledge in preparation for the demands of key stage 4.

There is an expectation that the successful applicant may be required to teach a small proportion of Film Studies, along side English.

We aim to:

  • Provide students with the tools required to communicate in a range of social and cultural settings including the world of employment.
  • Focus on the core skills required to function in society.
  • Build on the skills taught at KS2 including skimming and scanning, reading for meaning, analysing and evaluating.
  • Enable students to articulate their viewpoint on a wide range of issues.
  • Provide creative writing opportunities for students within all topics.
  • Broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live in.
  • Deliver a recursive curriculum, which builds on the skills taught in previous years.

Join our creative team - this post would suit either a new entrant to the profession or an experienced teacher and we would welcome a teacher returning to work after a career break, and will consider part time or flexible working where possible.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have the resolve to make a real difference to the lives of students
  • Be an excellent teacher and a committed team player
  • Have a proven track record of success and raising student attainment
  • Deliver innovative and creative lessons which engage and challenge students to achieve their full potential
  • Be committed to the academy’s ethos of high expectations.

In return you will benefit from:

  • Full support and induction
  • A strong and caring ethos among staff and students
  • Excellent CPD opportunities
  • Networking opportunities across Diverse Academies
  • Salary sacrifice schemes.

Visits are welcomed and encouraged – please contact Lynsey Baum - lbaum@holgate-ac.org.uk to arrange, or for further information.
