Job overview

We have two maternity cover vacancies.

The second is a 40% contract from February  until July 2019

We are seeking  well-qualified, enthusiastic and committed teachers with the ability to inspire students at both KS4 and KS5. You will join a well-established, ambitious department dedicated to ensuring that all students achieve or exceed their potential.

Ashby School is a thriving, successful and over-subscribed 14-19 Academy with 1700 students on roll including 600 post-16. With an excellent reputation within the local community the school is set in its own beautiful grounds in the popular market town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, which is close to several areas of outstanding natural beauty and with the newly created national forest on the doorstep. A recent Ofsted inspection found the school to be a ‘good school’ in all inspection categories.

The post offers an excellent opportunity for either an experienced teacher with a proven record of academic success looking for a new challenge, or an individual who is relatively new to the profession with the ability to teach up to KS5 from the outset. We offer an excellent induction programme within a supportive environment and are committed to high quality professional development and continuous improvement in both teaching and learning.

Lessons in our English Department are delivered in a suite of well-resourced classrooms fully equipped with a state of the art sound system, data projector, interactive white board, Apple TV, internet access and an extensive range of resources for both GCSE and A-level. Collaborative planning and teamwork are a strong focus of the department. Regular theatre visits are organised to assist students in bringing the texts they are studying to life. Recent visits have included The Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon the Curve Theatre, Leicester and the Repertory Theatre, Birmingham. Debating and public speaking clubs are a regular occurrence for students at both Key Stages 4 and 5.

We aim to instil in our students the belief that words are powerful and English lessons develop life-long skills. We also endeavour, through our own appreciation of literature and outstanding classroom practice, to foster a love of reading and to demonstrate the artistic value of books.

If you have energy, drive, a passion for your subject and the potential and ambition to be outstanding, you would be a welcome addition to our vibrant team.

Further information is available on the school website: www.ashbyschool.org.uk

Ashby School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all of its students and expects all staff to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to enhanced clearance by the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 15 October

At Ashby School, we have been delivering outstanding education and opportunities to students for more than 450 years.

We draw on the latest and most innovative teaching practices to create a vibrant and well-equipped learning environment, and are proud of our reputation for consistently high academic aspirations and achievements.

Our commitment to an open curriculum means students can choose from traditional core subjects as well as from our thriving sport, languages, design and arts provision.

The school has more than 1,700 students on roll, including 600 in our thriving Sixth Form.

Empowering Learning

At Ashby School, we have a passion for learning.

All students are given every opportunity to achieve their academic potential, supported by high standards of teaching. The majority of Year 10 and 11 lessons take place in specialist and/or refurbished classrooms on our dedicated KS4 campus.

Students of all abilities are encouraged to aim high.

Academic extension activities such as after school study sessions run all year round. We offer a rich and vibrant programme of extra-curricular activities, including an active performing arts scene, several musical ensembles, and numerous sporting clubs and competitions for young sportsmen and women of all abilities.

Other options include the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, peer mentoring and educational visits.

Empowering Wellbeing

The safety and wellbeing of students is our top priority.

We understand that students are more likely to thrive in a caring and supportive environment.

That is why we strive to ensure every student gets the support they need. Form Tutors establish strong relationships with students, guiding them through any issues and carefully monitoring their academic and personal progress. Form Tutors are supported by a dedicated pastoral team, including Heads of Year and Year Tutors, who are experienced at dealing with issues such as health, attendance and behaviour.

Empowering Achievement

Ashby School has been educating and inspiring students since 1567.

We are proud of our history and continue to uphold many of the core values that have been embedded in Ashby’s long-standing educational tradition for more than four centuries.

Like our predecessors, we recognise the importance of a happy and holistic school experience. That’s why we encourage students to flourish as individuals and to explore talents and opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.

Above all, we want our students to enjoy their time at Ashby School and to leave us for the next stage of their journey with happy and lasting memories.
