Job overview

At the Midland Academies Trust, we protect and promote the mental, physical, intellectual, and emotional health of young people. We do this by ensuring they are safe, happy, and successful, enjoying the very best of what has been thought and said in an environment which builds their capacity to become leaders of the future.

Heath Lane Academy seeks to appoint an ambitious and dynamic Teacher of English, with the drive, determination and skills to nurture and develop the potential of our increasingly aspirational pupils. We believe deeply in the transformational power of high-quality education which opens new pathways to the community we serve. Here at Heath Lane Academy, our ambitions are high, and we are determined to constantly find new and innovative ways to meet the needs of our students.

Our English Department is diligent and innovative and offers you:

  • A diverse curriculum which builds on key texts from the literary canon, such as The Odyssey and Richard III, whilst also building on local cultural capital.
  • Our curriculum is supported by a wealth of enrichment activities, such as library lessons, creative writing competitions, book award shadowing and theatre visits.
  • An experienced team, which can help develop newer members of the profession and enhance those who have more experience.
  • Whole class feedback and green pen marking used for students to enhance their progress and is designed to reduce teacher workload.
  • Knowledge organisers are used to support homework to reduce workload and help students to build knowledge.

Furthermore, schoolwide we have rigorous systems and policies, along with various opportunities to develop, such as:

  • Our core values which underpin everything we do - Honest, Enterprising, Aspirational, Together and Hardworking
  • A professional learning (PL) programme which includes regular whole school PL sessions, department focused PL sessions and instructional coaching to ensure every teacher gets individualised, recurring and sustained feedback
  • Opportunities for CPD such as NPQs, courses with StepLab and bespoke CPD for your subject areas
  • A behaviour system which is designed to be disruption free, line ups in the morning led by year leaders & SLT, and centralised detentions
  • Rigorous classroom routines via the use of SLANT and a teaching & learning model which is designed to empower teachers at every step
  • Assessment policy designed to ease workload and only two data collection points a year
  • Opportunities to lead trips, extra-curricular clubs and activities which enrich our students’ cultural capital

Heath Lane Academy is on a journey and we are looking for teachers who want to play an active role in our school and fully immerse themselves in our friendly and tight-knit community.

The successful applicant will join an ambitious and forward-thinking school where everyone is constantly seeking to improve because we know we can be even better.

Joining our family of schools:

We regard ourselves as a family of schools - our staff work in close collaboration, sharing workload and learning from each other. As a family, we have agreed and common ways of working in many areas, driven by shared values and developed in partnership with our staff.

We are a local Trust - our academies are located a short drive from each other, and we proudly serve the communities of Nuneaton, Hartshill and Earl Shilton, educating over 3000 young people each year. Our staff are the single greatest resource we have in our mission of creating successful futures for all the pupils in our care.

We place high value on subject expertise and continual professional development. This academic year, our teaching staff will receive over 40 hours of subject specific professional development, including a commitment to all staff experiencing instructional coaching. We work hard to reduce staff workload and our academies have been awarded the Fair Workload Charter recognising our innovative work in this area.

This Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Successful candidates will be required to complete an Enhanced DBS disclosure. Start dates will be conditional upon receipt of satisfactory pre-employment checks.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020. Which means that when applying for certain jobs and activities certain spent convictions and cautions are ‘protected’, so they do not need to be disclosed to employers, and if they are disclosed, employers cannot take them into account. Heath Lane Academy is:

  • A strong school at the heart of our community where pupils are safe, happy and do well.
  • A school where good manners and good behaviour are the norm; where we look after one another and respect each other.
  • A school where teaching is exciting and learning is successful; where everyone works hard in the classroom to make progress.
  • A school where our partnerships and community links prepare pupils for the modern world and their next steps in education, training and/or employment.

At Heath Lane Academy, we aim high and expect high standards of behaviour and academic effort from all of our pupils. We want pupils to feel happy about what they can achieve.

We believe our pupils should be good to one another, develop responsibility and be self-disciplined. Pupils know that success needs hard work, however we also ensure that pupils who are struggling to keep up receive the help and support they need to catch up from our teachers.

We are seeking to create an environment where we are all working to make children’s lives better and futures brighter. The goal is always that excellent behaviour and excellent learning should be second nature, it should simply be the way that we are. This is a mind-set that we want all our pupils to have, not just at school, but for the rest of their lives.

At Heath Lane, pupils are encouraged to be active participants in the whole community, the feel connected. They know how lucky they are, and they are encouraged to think about those who are less fortunate. We want our pupils to be compassionate, considerate and kind, always looking after those who haven’t been given the same opportunities.

Ofsted report

“An excellent range of subjects and activities reflects the academy’s commitment to meeting all students’ needs and aspirations. A wide range of out-of-school activities extends students’ experiences, and strongly supports their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. The progress of disabled students, those who have special educational needs and those for whom English is an additional language is just as good as that of other students. Students feel safe and say they are looked after very well in the academy.”
