Job overview

Peter Symonds is located in Winchester.  It is a vibrant sixth form college which has been rated by Ofsted as ‘outstanding’ in every respect. Our unofficial College motto has long been ‘Counting in Ones’ and we work hard to make this a supportive and friendly place to study, with every student treated as an individual. Not only is this at the heart of our work with our students, but we also strive to support and value our staff in the same way.

English Language and English Literature are part of the thriving Faculty of Communications & Performing Arts, each with their own Head of Subject. There is some shared staffing between the teams and both have very high levels of student satisfaction and success. In Literature, to complement the AS and A2 programme, there is an extensive range of workshops as well as theatre, conference and other trips. The specification is OCR, with all classes being shared by two teachers to increase the range of professional experience and skill available to students. The English Language specification is AQA and a number of students go on to study language or linguistics courses in higher education.

We seek a full time Teacher of English to teach both Literature and Language on a fixed term basis for one year. The successful candidate will be a graduate of English or of a closely allied subject, familiar with contemporary issues in the teaching of English and able to share their enthusiasm for the subject with their students. You will be a reflective teacher, committed to excellence in teaching and learning. We welcome applications from both newly qualified and experienced teachers.

We would also advise you that posts advertised to start in September 2017 actually commence with student enrolment on Tuesday 29 August 2017.  Teaching staff are required to work this week but should you have an existing commitment please make this clear on your application and we will honour it.

Closing date:  12 noon Tuesday 2 May 2017

Interview date: Thursday 11 May 2017

More details and information on how to apply are available on our website at www.psc.ac.uk under Staff Vacancies. If you require further assistance please phone the Personnel Department on 01962 857557 or email personnel@psc.ac.uk quoting the reference number 22/17.

We are dedicated to safeguarding the students in our care. To that end, a Disclosure and Barring Service enhanced disclosure will be required in the event of an individual being offered a position within our College. Our staff undertake regular safeguarding training and are subject to ongoing safeguarding scrutiny.

A large number of our students each year, usually around fifty, are able to secure places at the prestigious Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Pastoral support is well resourced and students also benefit from an unusual range of music, sporting and other enrichment opportunities.
