Pioneer Educational Trust is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, forward-thinking and committed teacher of English to join the English Department at Upton Court Grammar School. The ability to contribute to all aspects of the English curriculum is essential. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of outstanding teaching, and offer a variety of extra-curricular activities for our students.
The successful candidate must be able to contribute to the department’s aim of providing the highest standards of student achievement in all key stages. Please see the English department information page for more on the breadth of study in the subject.
The English Department is housed in a new six classroom block, fitted with SMART boards and projectors. In Years 7 and 8 the National Curriculum is delivered through 3 hours per week. At GCSE, students study for English Literature and English Language GCSEs with 7 hours of lessons per fortnight. GCSE students follow the Edexcel specification. At KS5, we teach English Literature and Media Studies. The Department has a tradition of high academic success. Experience of teaching Media Studies would be desirable.
The most recent OFSTED inspection graded the school as “Outstanding” in all areas. The school has a national reputation for excellence and achievement and was ranked 9th in the country for student progress in 2017, having attained a Progress 8 score of +1.21. Previously, the school was recognised as being in the top 2% of schools nationally and in March 2015 we won the SSAT Educational Outcome Award for exceptional progress.
As part of the School Direct Teacher Training programme, Upton Court Grammar School is also the lead school for the Teach Slough. Working alongside Reading University and the Institute of Education, teacher training is offered in the Slough area. As a Teaching School since September 2013 we provide a first class CPD programme which supports the professional development of teachers at all stages in their careers including teachers new to the profession and leadership development. Other benefits include membership to an employee reward scheme.
The school is changing rapidly, in many ways. This will doubtless continue as the needs of society and our context change too. It is never dull, often challenging, demanding in the best possible way - an exciting and extraordinarily worth-while and fulfilling place to be.
