The role

The English department at Bacon’s College is a successful and thriving one, determined to develop students’ potential in our subject.  Close links with the school library and weekly whole-class reading lessons in Years 7 to 9 demonstrate our commitment to instilling a love and appreciation for literature – a commitment which also informs our curriculum offer, ranging from Heaney’s Beowulf in Year 7 to A View From the Bridge in Year 9.  A team of dedicated and highly skilled teachers has ensured that recent GCSE results were strong (4+ 84%, 5+ 75%, and 7+ 35%) and A-level results are improving (A*-C 79% (Literature) and 77% (Language)).  Schemes of learning are planned by individuals for the department, with this planning often happening on a joint or group basis.  The department is a supportive one with a great deal of experience – many teachers are post-holders around the school and opportunities for both subject-specific and more general CPD are legion, whether through the College or its membership of the United Learning Trust.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach at all key stages, with the possibility of a TLR.  We are keen for a teacher to join us who shares our belief that all students can and will achieve to the very best of their ability, both in exam results and in a love of literature.  Our expectations for both children and ourselves are high – if you share those expectations, we look forward to hearing from you.

United Learning

Bacon’s College joined United Learning in Spring 2018, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

Bacon’s College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all who work at the school to share this commitment. Successful applicants will be subject to an enhanced disclosure through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
