Job overview

English Department at St Bede’s

We have a vacancy for a full-time teacher of English to join us in September 2023 on permanent appointment.

Please note, applications will be considered upon receipt and as such, this vacancy may close earlier than the deadline stated. Early applications are encouraged.

The English department, one of the largest in the school, is extremely successful. Teaching staff are very friendly, supportive of each other, professional and highly qualified. It is housed in a suite of eleven rooms, all of which are in close proximity. There is a head of department’s office, a departmental work room, and a well-resourced stockroom and book store. One room is equipped with computers and has access to the school’s network in order to accommodate teaching of media at A level. Each teaching room has access to its own range of multimedia hardware.

Year 7 is taught in mixed ability tutor groups. There is an increasing degree of fine tuning as students move from year 8 to 11, with some provision for the most able students as well as those who need additional support in their work.

In Key Stage 3 all teachers follow the same programmes of study in terms of content, but we encourage a level of autonomy and choice in delivery and pedagogy.

In Year 7 students study: an introductory unit on poetry; Myths and Legends; Frankenstein (play); Gothic Descriptive Writing; an introductory unit on Shakespeare alongside a related contemporary novel.

In Year 8 students study: A Midsummer Night’s Dream; an Imagined Worlds descriptive/narrative writing unit; Victorian literature: Childhood Experience; Rhetorical and Opinion writing; Animal Farm; The Power of Poetry.

In Year 9 students study: Journey’s End; Other Voices (Poetry from Different Cultures); Romeo and Juliet; a contemporary novel; Dystopian fiction; Introduction to Media.

At GCSE, students follow the AQA syllabus for English Language and all students are also entered for AQA English Literature. For A level, we offer both English Literature and English Language. We follow the AQA syllabus for both subjects (specification B for Literature). Both the GCSE and the A level courses demand great commitment from staff and depend for their success on high levels of leadership and efficient organisation. Colleagues are encouraged to develop and share resources.

Why work for us?

  • St Bede's is a good place to work. Staff are friendly and supportive of one another: relationships between staff and pupils were recognised by Ofsted as 'exceptionally strong'.
  • ECTs benefit from a well developed and comprehensive induction period programme. More experienced teachers are given the opportunity to participate in training which will help them to develop skills needed for middle and senior management roles.
  • There are good on-site catering facilities. Staff are able to use the fitness facilities free of charge and to participate in sports activities.
  • Music is a big part of school life and staff are welcome to join our senior choir and instrumental groups.
  • We have a social event at the end of each term as well as occasional staff trips to the theatre.
  • The school is situated in Redhill, a commuter belt town in the Surrey Fringe area. We are close to the M25 and there are good transport links to London and the South Coast from Redhill station which is about 15 minutes walk from the school. We also benefit from being within walking distance of beautiful countryside . Many staff live locally, others commute from Guildford, South London, Kent and East & West Sussex.

In March 2023 Ofsted carried out an inspection of St Bede’s and judged the school outstanding.

St Bede’s is a good place to work. The community is vibrant, focused on learning and caring for our students. Staff relationships are very strong, supportive and welcoming.  Our students like the school and behaviour is outstanding. We have approximately 1900 mixed ability students aged 11-18.  This includes over 300 studying academic courses in the sixth form. Our GCSE exam results make us one of the highest performing non-selective state schools in the country reflecting the very effective three way partnership we enjoy; hardworking pupils, committed staff and supportive parents.

We welcome applications from ECTs and more experienced teachers. Whatever your level of experience, and regardless of whether you are a teacher or member of support staff, this is a school where you will have opportunity to develop.  Teachers in their ECT years benefit from an excellent level of support through mentoring and a full ECT programme.

St Bede’s is unique.  This is the only state-funded school where Anglicans, Roman Catholic and the Free Churches are bound together in a formal partnership to provide a common Christian education, which values the distinctive contribution of each tradition.  St Bede’s is a charitable trust jointly held by the Anglican Diocese of Southwark and the RC Diocese of Arundel and Brighton.  Staff can be of any religion, or none at all, but must be able to support the ethos of the school.

Our facilities are very good; staff have free access to fitness facilities and there is very good on-site catering.  Teaching and support staff have opportunities to be involved in a very wide range of activities and visits.  We are situated in Redhill Surrey with good transport links to both London and the south coast.  We are very close to beautiful countryside.  This area offers the best of all worlds!

Our school is committed to the safeguarding of children so all appointments are subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS check. Only applications made on our School Application form will be considered; we do not accept CVs or unsolicited testimonials.  It is our policy always to request references prior to interview.
