Job overview

We are looking for an exceptional Teacher of English with a dynamic and inspirational approach to teaching. As a well-qualified English graduate with the ability to teach up to A2, you will enable all pupils to reach their potential, and challenge our most able of students.

The English Department at Guildford High School has two aims: to maintain its record of academic success, and to continue its lively contributions to the cultural life of the school.

Most members of the Department teach across a variety of age groups, from Year 7 to the Sixth Form. There is a dynamic working atmosphere in the Department and it has traditionally allowed its members some autonomy in teaching an agreed and regularly revised internal syllabus. With the three youngest age groups, Years 7 to 9, English teachers have the scope to develop their individual enthusiasms. While the National Curriculum is not followed as such, its main requirements are covered. A firm technical grounding in the English language is stressed. Drama is an integral part of the Years 7 to 9 syllabus.

At GCSE / Key Stage 4, Edexcel IGCSE specifications in both English Language and English Literature are taught. The successful candidate would be expected to teach a class in this syllabus. The Department’s most recent examination results have been impressive, with most girls achieving A* and A grades in English Language, English Literature and Drama.

Sixth Form teaching currently follows the EDEXCEL AS and A2 Specifications in both English Literature and the combined English Language and Literature course, with the coursework option. The successful applicant may be required to teach both the AS and A2 specifications in English Literature. An ability to teach the AS/A2 English Language and Literature course may be an advantage. Again, results have been impressive, with most girls achieving A* and A grades.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to and/or develop other activities in which the Department is involved; these include directing school plays, editing the arts magazine and participation in our Shakespeare, Poetry and Prose Festivals.
