Job overview

Who we are

Marylebone Boys' School is an Academy Free School which opened in September 2014. We have approximately 600 boys in Years 7-11 and opened a mixed Sixth Form in 2019. We will eventually have over 800 pupils studying at our school across two sites.

We are an inner-city boys’ school with a cohort of over 40% Pupil Premium students. We are an academically rigorous school with an emphasis on commitment to learning and outstanding teaching, where knowledge is valued and available to all who are prepared to work for it. Expectations are high for all pupils. Those who need extra time and support are helped and expected to achieve their full potential. Our motto is “studio et industria”, which can be translated as “through application and hard work”.

Commitment to safeguarding

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and safeguarding checks as required under Keeping Children Safe in Education will be carried out.

Our location

We are located in a modern building in the heart of the prestigious Paddington Basin area with a sixth form block in close proximity to our main site on North Wharf Road.

Purpose of the role

Take ownership, explore the world through literature and teach! At Marylebone Boys’ School, you will join a collaborative and vibrant team of teachers and staff. You will have the opportunity to support a diverse range of pupils in an energetic environment.

We are seeking to appoint a teacher who is enthusiastic and an inspirational practitioner who can teach English at KS3, KS4 and KS5. A teacher who will help the team make a difference to our boys, many of whom face material and social disadvantage. This role would give the appointed candidate a real chance to make a meaningful difference.

The school has a strong English Faculty and is an excellent place to start or further your teaching career. We are a supportive and very well-resourced department that is always looking for ways to develop our practice and we utilise faculty meeting to share new ideas and discuss how to embed them so that our boys can feel supported.

The successful applicant will build on the solid foundations already in place and uphold the school’s commitment of ensuring every child succeeds.

The job would also suit an Early Careers Teacher or someone who is in the early stages of their teaching career and wants experience of a different school context.

The school is committed to providing excellent professional development and training – be that for an ECT programme (supported by Ambition Institute) or relevant CPD for a person in any stage of their teaching career.

About Marylebone Boys School

Our History & Ethos

Marylebone Boys' School is a Free School which opened in September 2014. We have 600 boys in Years 7-11 and a mixed sixth form which launched in 2019.

We are an inner-city boys’ school with a cohort of over 49% Pupil Premium students. We are an academically rigorous school with an emphasis on good behaviour, commitment to learning and outstanding teaching, where knowledge is valued and available to all who are prepared to work for it. Expectations are high for all pupils. Those who need extra time and support will be helped and expected to achieve their full potential. Our motto is “studio et industria”, which can be translated as “through application and hard work”.

Academic rigour

Marylebone Boys’ School is an academically rigorous school. We believe that knowledge and skills are available to all who are prepared to work for it. Furthermore, we believe in setting of high expectations for all students, within a framework which is tailored to meet the distinctive needs of different groups of learners.

From day one of Year 7, we believe it is essential that our boys are offered a deep grounding in core academic subjects by engaging with essential GCSE skills as well as subject specific knowledge and understanding. We believe that this acquisition of high level knowledge combined with the application of core skills is an important partnership. Every pupil will strive to achieve the EBacc qualification, and master a wide selection of academic subjects through a five year curriculum.

Furthermore, it is our core belief that the boys will be equipped with knowledge and skills that will enable them to succeed in every aspect of their life at secondary school and beyond. For us, this means delivering an academic curriculum, as well as a Period 6 enrichment programme consisting of enrichment and intervention.

Location

We are based in a new building located in the heart of the prestigious Paddington Basin area built by Westminster City Council. We are just a stone’s throw from Paddington Station with all the benefits of Crossrail as well as the existing Underground and National Rail connections.

We also have a specialist sixth form building dedicated to teaching post-16 education with brand new classrooms in close proximity on North Wharf Road.

CPD

CPD is at the heart of our vision for teaching and learning at MBS. We aim to instil love for learning and improvement in our staff as well as our students. We are constantly aiming to improve our CPD offer and tailor it to the needs of our growing community.

This year we have employed a Lead Practitioner of Teaching & Learning in order to provide meaningful support and opportunities for teachers in a developmental way. We have also opened up new avenues for leadership development opportunities so that we can build leadership capacity across the school, this includes a Leadership Development Course aimed at aspiring and current middle leaders.

Our CPD programme works in conjunction with our Quality of Education cycle, teaching and learning priorities and appraisal policy and includes; dedicated twilight sessions rooted in one of Teaching and Learning core priorities, whole school INSET days, strategy groups focusing on literacy, SEN, curriculum development and pastoral care.

Pre-appointment checks

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to a number of safer recruitment checks, including an Enhanced DBS and Barred List check as part of Keeping Children Safe in Education, and once in post, receive further training and updates.
