Job overview

The Post and The Department

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic teacher to join our highly successful Drama and English departments. The post is created due to the expansion of student numbers, principally in the International School. We are introducing Drama as a curricular subject in the International School, to be taught initially in years 9 and 10, with a view to developing an IGCSE option in Y11 from 2020-21. This presents challenges and opportunities of pioneering this area with students for whom English is an additional language and who come from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

We also need additional teaching capacity to teach English across key stage 3 and 4 in our Year 7-11 day school (based in Leckford Road).

The International School (TIS) is a thriving and rapidly growing part of d’Overbroeck’s and we are expanding both our curricular and extra-curricular provision to serve students attending TIS for between one and three years. While the successful candidate will be working under the guidance and support of the Director of Drama, there is considerable scope to develop new courses and activities in this part of the school.

Class sizes are small (maximum of 10 at TIS and 15 in 7-11) and the emphasis is on individual care and interactive learning.

The Person

We are looking for a suitably qualified, talented and committed teacher of English and/or Drama to join our strong team of teachers.  We place a high degree of importance on subject expertise as well as the ability to convey enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject to students across the ability range.  We embrace a flexible approach to teaching and would welcome someone with a sense of fun and a readiness to respond to students’ individual needs.

Applicants should complete the appropriate application form, and submit this, along with a full curriculum vitae and covering letter to HR@doverbroecks.com and a signed copy sent to:

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
