Job overview

Teacher of English with Leadership responsibility

Start date: September 2022

Salary: Main Pay Scale/Upper Pay Scale + TLR

Costello is a Good school with Outstanding features – Ofsted, Nov 2021

A rare opportunity has arisen to join our English team in a leadership role. You will complement our Curriculum Team Leader and other TLR holder, with direct responsibilities of the post shaped to the successful candidate – they may be leading a Key Stage, a strategic area, or pedagogical development within the team.

Is there a job more important than helping a child find their voice? We don’t think so, and if you have a love of language and literature and a passion for reading we’d love to hear from you. If you’d love to work with a full team of specialists, who share your passion for the written and spoken word, then you’ve just found the job for you.

You will join a close knit team that are achieving special things, with GCSE results well above national, and one that is at the forefront of learning in English. Our recent Ofsted inspection highlighted the exemplary practice in the English department – we’d love you to come and join our high performing team.

So, if you can:

• Inspire and innovate

• Nurture and develop (yourself as well as others)

• Commit to, and raise further, high achievement and motivation

• Optimise English learning for all

Then come and see us. Here’s just a few reasons why you’d be mad not to:

• Our greatest strength is our people and we work hard to make sure you know that. Wellbeing is central to all we do – you get 3 wellbeing days a year off, and 12 hours of time to undertake wellbeing activities including jewellery making, baking, quizzes and tea & cake!

• Not to mention the SLT breakfast we cook you, the end of term Christmas meal, Easter Egg hunt, or summer BBQ where we also give out awards, prizes, and champagne. Staff wellbeing is at our core – something recognised in our recent Ofsted inspection.

• Planning your lessons is crucial and it’s always easier when we collaborate – we’ve put in place hours of co-planning so that you can share best practice and resources and not have to sit at home doing it on your own. Our NQT/ECT programme is exceptional and our new teachers stay for years ahead because of how well they are supported – come and ask them!

• Our recent Ofsted inspection judged us as Good with Outstanding features, and said that ‘Leaders, teachers and support staff work together as a tight-knit team to meet these pupils’ pastoral and academic needs very well. Good relationships between staff and pupils ensure typically calm, respectful behaviour across the school. Pupils enjoy school and feel happy and proud to be here.

• Being part of The Bohunt Education Trust means you get dedicated time with like-minded colleagues from 7 other schools, specialist training opportunities, and career progression opportunities which open doors every year.

If you would like an informal discussion prior to your application, would like to know more, or would like a tour of the school, please contact our Headteacher, Randall Jull, on r.jull@costello.hants.sch.uk

Closing date for applications: Monday 23 May, 9.00 am.

We reserve the right to interview and appoint upon receipt of suitable applications earlier than the advertised deadline.

Bohunt Education Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting welfare of children and young people and requires all staff and volunteers to share and demonstrate this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check and other relevant pre-employment checks.

We are committed to equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and marriage and civil partnerships.

Enriching Lives

At Costello we believe that every child deserves the very best education and challenge the idea that social context should be a barrier to their academic success. We exist first and foremost to improve the life chances of young people through excellent care, teaching and guidance and believe that the relationship between home and school is paramount. We are here to make sure that our students go on to be successful and happy in what whatever they do.

Who we are

Our culture is built on trust and cooperation between all stakeholders, enabling us to take risks, be honest, ask the difficult questions and support each other when necessary. As leaders of learning we do not sit back and continue to do the same things year in year out, especially if we know we could do better. We invest heavily in CPD and training and have fantastic links with other schools and professional organisations. New ideas and approaches are welcomed with open arms and coaching is used to unlock potential. We work very closely with our ‘family’ of partner schools and are currently the strategic lead for a unique teaching and learning project.

Our Location

Costello is nestled in amongst luscious rolling hills of Hampshire on the outer fringes of the vibrant county town of Basingstoke. Look one way and you have extensive shopping, culture, bars, restaurants and sport. Look the other and you are deep in the countryside with cosy village pubs, beautiful walks, rivers and lots of places to explore.

Where else can you be living the high life of the city one minute and be deep in the heart of the New Forest the next? Served by fantastic fast rail and road links to the South Coast, London and beyond, with the M3 and M4 close by, Basingstoke is the gateway to the south.

Supporting You

Work with us and you will undertake a fantastic induction programme and get personalised support including being assigned a mentor, no matter what your role, even the Headteacher has one! We encourage, and are recognised for, our professional and personal development programme and value highly strong leadership and coaching skills.

We hate losing great people but equally encourage staff to shoot for the stars and if that means you moving on somewhere else, after a period of time, then we get it and we will help you. We get people from all sorts of backgrounds joining us and quite often they start doing one thing and then move into a different area.

What next?

We love to hear from people who are looking for their first or perhaps next challenge. Prior to applying why not come and have a look around? We are always happy to give you a tour, let you get a feel for the place and meet potential future colleagues and students. You don’t even need to wait for an advert to appear, drop our HR team a line (d.andrews@costello.hants.sch.uk) telling us a bit about yourself, including your CV, and we will contact you if a suitable position becomes available.

Please do not be put off applying for a role just because you don’t think you have got everything we are looking for or are underqualified. Let us be the judge of whether you are suitable or not. Remember if you don’t apply you have no chance of getting the job so why not take a chance?
