Job overview

We are recruiting for a part time teacher in Equine (29.6 hours per week). You will perform the role of Teacher of Equine, undertaking preparation, delivery and marking, ensuring achievement of agreed performance and quality targets. You will be expected to strive to maintain above average success rates in all areas, using innovation within your teaching and assessing and utilising e-learning opportunities where appropriate.


As part of the teacher role you will deliver the practical and theory aspects of the Equine curriculum across all levels of FE and HE. You will be required to deliver high quality, inspirational teaching which encourages learners to reach their full potential, promoting progression on to higher level courses or preparing them for careers working within the equestrian industry. As part of the Equine team you will be required to participate in the resourcing and preparation of the course delivery and assessment, undertake course administration including setting and reviewing academic targets with learners.


You will be open, personable and a good team player and be comfortable being a hands-on member of the equine team, forming good relationships with the rest of the team and supporting them with lesson ideas, cover and student management. You will attend regular lunchtime meetings and work with the team to deliver a holistic curriculum and seek opportunities to collaborate to ensure that lessons have universal benefit and not stand alone. You will have a flexible and co-operative approach to your job and understand that beyond teaching, you are happy arranging and attending regular parent and information evenings and organising and attending FE and HE Open days.


The successful candidate will have proven experience of providing outstanding support for learners and will be flexible, self-motivated and dedicated to student achievement and quality. Up to date knowledge and experience of equine husbandry is essential, with knowledge and experience in a broad range of industry settings advantageous.

Derby College is a large general further education college with four sites in or near the city of Derby. It supports around 26,000 learners, who choose from more than 1,000 full-time and part-time apprenticeship, A-level, BTEC and NVQ courses.   

Derby College was established as a single institution in 2002 by merging three further education colleges: Mackworth Tertiary College, Wilmorton Tertiary College and Broomfield Agricultural College. A merger between South East Derbyshire College and Derby College was approved in 2010. Heavy investment has been made by the college in its teaching and learning facilities, from the fully equipped teaching kitchens at the Roundhouse campus to the high-tech science labs at the Joseph Wright Centre and the Equestrian Centre at the Broomfield Hall campus.
