Job overview

The Axholme Academy wishes to appoint an enthusiastic, creative and innovative professional to start with us as a Teacher of Food Technology on a maternity cover basis from January 2020 to Autumn 2020. We are offering an opportunity to work in a supportive Academy environment where excellent learning and teaching is at the heart of what we do.

In July 2017 Ofsted confirmed that The Axholme Academy continues to provide a good education for students and inspectors told us that we have “successfully created a culture in which your pupils want to succeed.” Would you like to teach young people who want to learn and aspire to achieve the best possible outcomes? If so then you could be the Food technology teacher that we are looking for! You may be an NQT or a more experienced teacher; what is important to us is that you are passionate about Food Technology and are looking to develop a love of Food Technology in the young people that you teach regardless of their ability. In either case you will be joining a talented and supportive team led by a highly committed and forward thinking head of department.

The Axholme Academy is increasingly becoming the first choice school for parents in the local area, not just those in our traditional catchment area of the market town of Crowle and surrounding villages but also those traditionally catered for by different local authorities. This has led to us increasing the number of students on roll year on year which in turn has enabled us to increase the number of staff that we employ thereby further improving the quality of our provision. As such the Academy is now oversubscribed in the majority of year
groups.

The Academy is a founder member of The Northern Lincolnshire Education Consortium and the lead school for its School Direct teacher training programmes. This highlights the importance that we place in developing
the best possible teachers for our students and our commitment to this continues throughout our teachers’ careers. We can not only provide the successful candidate with high quality opportunities for personalised professional development but also the opportunity to establish high impact partnerships across the region.

To apply for this role please visit the vacancies section on our website to download an application form and send it, with a covering letter of no more than 2 sides, to Sophie Leggott, Business Manager, at sleggott@theaxholmeacademy.com. Visits to the academy are encouraged, please email Sophie Leggott to make arrangements.

Closing date: 14th October 2019
Interviews: 17th October 2019

The Axholme Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. Any offer of employment to this post will be subject to receipt of a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service. LOCATION

The school is situated in rural surroundings on the southern edge of the small town of Crowle.  We are approximately 10 miles west of Scunthorpe, 17 miles east of Doncaster, 11 miles south of Goole and only 1.5 miles away from Junction 2 of the M180.  The cities of Hull, Leeds, Sheffield, York and Lincoln are easily reached within one hour’s driving time.

The school’s catchment area covers the part of the Isle of Axholme north of the A18 and includes primary schools in Crowle and the villages of Keadby, Eastoft, Luddington and Garthorpe.  The vast majority of children from these areas transfer to us.  A number of students from East Yorkshire and Doncaster also opt to attend our school.  Approximately two thirds of the students travel to school by bus.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS

The school celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008. It occupies a lovely site providing very good accommodation including a full-size sports hall and good specialist and general teaching areas.

Recent capital developments include:
- A major investment in new biomass boilers

- New roofs

- LED lighting

  • The school has extensive and well-maintained playing fields set within pleasant grounds surrounded by open countryside.  Additionally, the Axholme North Sports Centre is on the school site and includes a swimming pool, outdoor tennis and netball courts, gym, and 3G outdoor football pitch.

THE SCHOOL

The school roll currently stands at approximately 565 students.

In March 2023 Ofsted confirmed that The Axholme Academy continues to provide a good education for students.

They reported that leaders have high expectations of pupils’ conduct. Pupils are polite and respectful and in lessons, they focus on their education. Leaders are committed to providing pupils with a rich and diverse set of opportunities to develop their cultural capital.

They found that students feel safe and that our safeguarding is effective. They judged that governors ensure that there are high levels of accountability across the school and that they are proactive in finding out about how the school is working.

Our strong GCSE performance, including outstanding English and maths results, put us in a very strong position to continue our successful growth and development with the outstanding team at the academy.

TEACHING STAFF
There are presently 33 members of the teaching staff.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

We maintain a sharp focus on teaching and learning across the school.  We provide a range of CPD opportunities for teaching and support staff with the intention of continually improving standards.  Where development needs cannot be met in-house, staff  are encouraged to access high quality external provision.  We embrace, promote and share excellent teaching and learning approaches to ensure that each student receives a top class education.

CURRICULUM

All students on entry to Year 7 will study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, R.E., Technology, French, Art, Music, P.E. and Complementary Studies. This curriculum model is maintained in Years 8 and 9, with slight variations in
MFL, and for the Support Group.

EXTERNAL EXAMINATIONS

All students work towards a range of external qualifications including GCSE and BTEC. Students are entered for examinations administered by various boards, but principally by AQA, OCR, Edexcel and WJEC.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

A wide range of academic, sporting and social extra curricular activities are available to students.  These are mainly held during lunch time.
