The Directors of The Gardener Schools Group have established Kew House School in the conviction that there exists an opportunity for a different kind of independent secondary school in London - academically demanding but with a modern approach to selection criteria, the flexibility of the curriculum, the shape of the school day and term and recognition of creativity and talent.

The school opened with 63 students in September 2013 and now has 550 with just under 600 expected for September 2020. We opened for internal and external Sixth Form candidates for the first time in September 2016. The school will grow to full capacity over the next 2 years with 625 students aged 11-18.

The school operates its own pay scales consistent with national teacher pay scales and will offer salary commensurate with experience and the nature of this role. 

We offer GCSE from Year 9 onwards. The core subjects receive 4.5 hours per week of contact time from Year 7 to 11. All A Level subjects have 6 hours of contact time in two 3-hour sessions per week. Students also have independent learning time. After school clubs offer great scope for extension activities. Trips and visits play a large part in the students’ experience. 

The successful candidate will be a qualified and enthusiastic graduate teacher with the ability to inspire students. As a member of the department, it will be essential that the candidate is an outstanding teacher with the ability and enthusiasm to teach subject content to GCSE and possibly A Level/Level 3. We use the WJEC Level 3 post 16 course. KS3 consists of Years 7 and 8, and students work on a carousel with DT/CAD/Art. Lessons are 3 hours in duration for all lessons in Food Technology.

This is a part-time, permanent post from September 2020.

There is opportunity to develop and take on additional management roles, academic or pastoral, for the right candidate and we would welcome applications from those seeking to develop leadership experience.

Location

The school is housed in a modern and newly equipped building, close to rail and road links near Kew Bridge. These include Gunnersbury Underground station (7 minutes) and Kew Bridge British Rail Station (2 minutes). There is also some on-site parking.

The school will take pupils from a wide area but it is expected that many will come from the local area. The location of the school will allow it to feel like a community school as opposed to some schools further from the centre of London where travel times are greater.

Facilities

The buildings are equipped with modern, cutting edge facilities including science labs, art and design, a design and technology suite, performance space, music department and rehearsal rooms, restaurant, café, flexible teaching suites and meeting rooms. The sixth form enjoy a superb independent learning centre (ILC) and roof garden for their exclusive use.

The use of information technology is given great importance within the school and a digital curriculum is a core component of the education for Kew House students. As such, access to computers, tablets and other digital media is available throughout the building in flexible spaces and smaller hubs.

The school is well placed to make maximum use of the full range of sporting facilities close to the school. These include the Fountain Leisure Centre, the River Thames for rowing, and a full range of pitches and athletics facilities nearby.

Curriculum

We offer a full range of GCSE and A Level subjects. The curriculum will be structured around a two-year Key Stage Three and flexible timetabling. The school pursues excellence in all areas whether examinable or not. The school’s aim is to provide a rich and broad education to all students whatever their specialism. Whilst we aim to achieve the highest academic results for each student, we do not serve as an examination “factory”.

An extensive extra-curricular programme is in place. This consists of sport, creative activities and curriculum extension sessions in the full range of subjects. We also include guest speakers and workshops to inspire the students. Residential and other school visits are encouraged, making the optimum use of the resources and facilities available locally, nationally and internationally. 

The Individuals in Society (IS) course focuses on personal development, emotionally, practically and intellectually. This is a timetabled teaching programme.

Pastoral

The ethos of the new school is that of a family and social hub, giving emotional support and security to all students and employees. Each student receives individual attention both educationally and pastorally. The approach emphasises the partnership with parents; their involvement, with parents often spending time in school, is part of the ethos of Kew House.  As the school matures, our vertical tutor groups will add to the family approach.

Requirements for the position:

A good degree in an appropriate subject and a recognised teaching qualification

• To be able to teach KS3 GCSE and A Level Food Technology

• To demonstrate good IT skills and develop the use of the interactive whiteboard and VLE in this state-of-the-art food facility.

• To offer extra-curricular clubs and activities to optimise the opportunities for our students.

Commitment to, and experience of, using a range of teaching styles and methods including ICT. Classrooms are equipped with IWB/digital projectors. A VLE will be developed as a priority to support student learning

Offer extra support through subject clinics and revision classes. Willingness to participate in the wider co-curricular life of the school

The Recruitment Process

Candidates are required to submit a completed application form together with a supporting letter of application and details of two referees. One referee should be able to comment on the teaching skills of the candidate, and one must be the current or most recent employer. References will be taken prior to interview. Candidates must provide original documents as proof of identity at interview.

Kew House School is a co-educational independent senior school for students aged 11-18 years in West London, near to Kew and Chiswick. The school opened its doors for the first time in September 2013 with 63 students and now has over 550 on roll. It is the sister school to Maida Vale School, Ravenscourt Park and Kew Green Preparatory Schools and is owned by The Gardener Schools Group Ltd, a family company founded by Maria and Edward Gardener.

Ethos and aims

Individualised attention both pastorally and educationally for all students. KHS benefits from having a smaller student roll than many independent senior schools and provides the flexibility needed to enable students to fulfill their potential.
