Job overview

Job Description – Teacher of French and Spanish

Role Details

We are looking to appoint an exceptional Modern Foreign Language Teacher with excellent subject knowledge and a commitment to sharing their passion for languages with the pupils.

The Modern Foreign Languages department

The Modern Foreign Languages department consists of five full time and two part time teachers. The department is well resourced with projectors in classrooms as well as portable audio equipment. There is also an additional Sixth Form study room. The department have their own laptops and iPads. IT is an integral part of teaching and the department has several excellent multimedia presentation packages for both languages. There is an extensive library of film and books and we subscribe to several foreign language publications.

Spanish and French are compulsory in First and Second Form with those pupils joining the School from the Junior School having already studied French for two periods a week in years 5 and 6. All pupils are set according to their ability with beginners taught separately in the first term. In the Third Form, the pupils may choose either to continue with two languages or opt to study either French or Spanish. Both languages are a popular option at GCSE (with a 95% take up) and at A Level. Examination results are excellent with almost 100% A* - C pass rate at GCSE. The courses followed in First Form to Third Form are ‘Studio’ and ‘Mira’ published by Heinemann. The department has recently moved to teaching Edexcel International GCSE and A Level. In French and Spanish the groups follow the Edexcel International GCSE course and Edexcel A level course, both published by Hodder.

Class sizes are small; they do not exceed 20 pupils and most groups are smaller than this. Lessons are fast-paced and lively and include a wide variety of activities. The Department aims to create a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere in the classroom where pupils are engaged and encouraged to achieve their full potential.

All teachers in the department are encouraged to take an active role in the organisation of trips, such as the annual exchange visits to Marseilles and Seville.

Teacher of Spanish and French

The person appointed will be expected to teach a combination of French up to and including A Level and Oxbridge entrance and Spanish to Third Form. All of the department currently teach both languages.

The Department works strongly together as a team and the successful candidate will be able to develop and strengthen the profile of languages at Cokethorpe. Good practice is shared, and regular meetings are held in order to discuss ideas and monitor progress. Ideal candidates will have very good ICT skills for both teaching and administration and be willing to contribute to the bank of electronic resources on the School’s VLE.

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
