Job overview

Hampton Court House is ranked number 1 on the Independent Schools Council’s table of ‘small independent schools’ and has been shortlisted for the TES Independent School Awards 2020 ‘senior school of the year’. Over 70% of the grades in mathematics A level were A*-A in 2019.

Hampton Court House is situated opposite Hampton Court Palace, adjacent to Bushy Park. We are a fast-growing school, with pupil numbers increasing each year. The school occupies a three-hectare site within landscaped grounds. There are pupils from pre-school to Year 13.

We seek a charismatic communicator to teach in our small maths department, to inspire our children with the beauty of mathematics, and help all of them to gain satisfaction from appropriate mathematical achievements. The successful candidate will be expected to teach five periods of Further Maths to Year 12 students.

Our Sixth Form teaching is scheduled between 1.30 pm and 7 pm to suit the circadian rhythm of adolescents in their late teens. Class sizes at A level are very small and our students are of a high calibre looking towards Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities. In 2019 nearly all our students went to their first-choice university. The relevant times for the periods will be from 5.25 pm to 7 pm (Tuesday and Thursday) and 1.35 pm to 2.20 pm (Monday). If the Monday period is problematic, then an alternative time could be 5.25 pm to 6.10 pm on Friday. This is a fixed term contract until the end of Summer Term 2020.

We are looking for well-qualified mathematicians, who will be able to inspire enthusiasm in our pupils and help to promote the high cultural and academic ethos of the school. Applications are equally welcome from teachers with some years’ experience and from new entrants to the profession.

If you would like to discuss informally further details of the post, please contact the Head of Mathematics, Anja Lichtenau by email (al@hchnet.co.uk) or telephone (020 8614 0858).

Hampton Court House is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Nestled in Bushy Park, Richmond-upon-Thames, Hampton Court House is an independent co-educational day school for ages 2 – 18, educating Early Years children in our Pre-Prep School & Nursery, The Little Courtiers, to students in Year 13.

The majority of our pupils elect to stay on to complete their full education with us, enjoying great success in their GCSEs and A Levels: in 2023, 40% of A Level grades were awarded A*/A, resulting in a 100% Oxbridge and Russell Group application success rate. Our GCSE results were equally strong, with 70% of all GCSE grades being awarded A*/A. Hampton Court House was in 2022 ranked in the top 50 independent schools nationwide (The Telegraph) and in the top 10 co-educational independent schools in London (School Owl, 2023).

Our programmes offer an extraordinary education. From the Forest School in Early Years and the award-winning Institut francais LabelFrancÉducation accredited French bilingual programme, to the Nebula Future Researcher’s Programme © in the Sixth Form, Hampton Court House pupils get a head start every step of the way.

We lay the foundations of a lifelong love of learning, and it is important to us that children enjoy being here and look forward to coming to school. In keeping with our ethos, we believe that children need some guided freedom in order to develop their independence and confidence to use their voice. Our non-uniform parkland campus environment, in which staff and pupils alike are addressed on a first-name basis, cultivates an energy where pupils grow in confidence and find themselves.

The school is located close to Hampton Court station, which is 35 minutes from Waterloo and 20 minutes from Wimbledon by train. There are also frequent buses to and from Kingston, Hampton, Teddington and Twickenham, or for staff who drive, there is on-site parking.
