Applications are invited from highly professional, enthusiastic and well-qualified teachers for this exciting, rewarding and demanding post to teach Geography across Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. This will involve teaching AQA Geography at GCSE and  Edexcel at A level. We are interested to hear from candidates about any other subject area they could also offer and to which key stage level they can deliver this to.

Bristol Cathedral Choir School is an academy that specialises in Mathematics and Music. The academy became part of the Cathedral Schools Trust (a Multi Academy Trust) in 2016. It serves students from all over Bristol and welcomes those of all faiths and none.  We are proud of our diverse, tolerant and respectful community, which reflects Bristol’s demographic.

“The ethos and culture of the academy are outstanding. Pupils from a wide and diverse range of backgrounds, faiths, beliefs and values come together in an exceptionally harmonious environment where all are respected, valued and supported to do well.”  Ofsted 2016.

The school received an overall judgement of “Outstanding” from Ofsted in January 2016 and is the most oversubscribed school in Bristol, with a trend of strong results in public examinations at both GCSE and A level.

As a Teaching School, we are able to offer a coherent, high quality programme of continuing professional development. In addition, there may be the opportunity to progress towards designation as  a Specialist Leader of Education, depending on the individual career history of the candidate.

The Geography Department

Geography is an extremely popular and well regarded subject within our school that focuses upon engaging and high quality learning. The department currently consists of a Subject Lead and a further two specialist Geography teachers.

Lessons are mainly taught in two specialised rooms, which are next to each other,  well-equipped, modern and well-resourced. Lessons are varied with a mix of active, collaborative and independent learning, with a strong emphasis on metacognition and assessment skills .

During KS4 students carry out both human and physical fieldwork by visiting a river in South Wales and investigating the regeneration at Temple Quarter in Bristol City Centre. At A-level, students conduct place based field investigations and have the opportunity to attend a residential field visit at Slapton Ley Field Studies Centre to aid their coursework.

Geography is taught in discrete lessons. It is taught once a week in year 7, alongside a humanities skills curriculum,  and three times a fortnight in years 8&9. During KS3 topics move from a local to a global focus. By the end of the key stage students are covering GCSE style content in preparation for KS4. Popular KS3 topics of study include; ‘Representing Places’, Understanding Africa’, ‘Raging Rivers’, ‘Our Hazardous World’ and ‘Exploring China’’.

Geography is a popular GCSE option subject. We follow the AQA syllabus, currently covering the option topics of Desert Environments, Coasts and Energy Security.

At A-level we follow the Edexcel Syllabus. at present our selected option units include; Diverse Places, Coastal Environments and Health and Human Rights. The course includes completion of an independent investigation worth 20% of A-level marks, as well as a synoptic paper based on unseen content.
