Job overview

As an outstanding academy for the third consecutive time (May 2012), we invite you to apply for the position of Key Stage 5 Manager in Geography. Geography is a popular subject at both GCSE and Post 16. Our Academy is easily accessible, being 30 minutes from the centre of Birmingham and we are located near Junction 9 of the M6.

Our aim is for all our students to achieve excellence in education, so we are all extremely proud of the recognition we have received from Ofsted in our latest inspection.

“This is an outstanding school. It provides excellent opportunities for students to thrive, develop and achieve exceptionally well, irrespective of their different circumstances.”

We are a “Converter Academy”, one of the first 100 Teaching Schools, a Specialist Sports, Maths and Computing College, a member of the Leading Edge Partnership and a “High Performing School.” We are over-subscribed and consistently achieve some of the highest results in Sandwell. In January 2014 we were proven to be one of the top 100 schools in England showing the greatest sustained improvement in the percentage of pupils achieving five or more A* to C grades at GCSE, including English and Maths.

As an enthusiastic and committed teacher, you would join a successful Geography department. Successful candidates will be:

  • Highly motivated and passionate about providing all students with the very best educational opportunities.
  • Believe in the importance of excellent teaching in Geography, and can inspire students
  • Committed to further developing their teaching and professional skills
  • Have proven success at achieving good outcomes for both GCSE and Post 16 students in Geography

In return, successful candidates can expect to work with enthusiastic and well behaved students who have a genuine desire to learn, to work with colleagues who are friendly and supportive, and to be part of a school which values its staff and offers ample opportunities for professional development and advancement. We have dedicated weekly CPD opportunities and last year 14 of our staff gained promotions internally.

Wood Green Academy is a large 11-19 multicultural comprehensive school set in Wednesbury in the heart of the Black Country. The academy is located about 15km from the centre of Birmingham and has excellent national links by having the M5 and M6 nearby. It is an innovative, creative and forward-thinking school held in high regard locally and nationally. The Academy has a long-standing reputation for achieving some of the best GCSE and Post 16 results in the local area. In our most recent Ofsted of February 2020 the school was judged to be good with outstanding features. We are extremely proud of being one of a small number of secondary schools in the country to have been graded as outstanding for behaviour and attitudes under the new framework.

Proud of belonging to a large and diverse school, our staff are professional, highly dedicated, collaborative, supportive and friendly. We are fully staffed in all areas with subject specialists. Our staffing is extremely stable with a large proportion of our staff having worked at Wood Green Academy for many years. We continually invest in staff development through weekly dedicated Continuing Professional Development (CPD) time, and by offering professional development opportunities and career development. We are also a National Support School and a School Direct Lead School heavily involved with Initial Teacher Training working with local universities and Teach First through post graduate courses.

Our students are enthusiastic, well behaved and keen to learn. They are welcoming, positive and proud of their Academy. They have a good working relationship with staff, which is built on mutual trust, honesty and respect.

The Academy, although always striving to excel and attain the very best in terms of achievement, also strongly believes in the importance of developing the whole child. We seek to give students the very best of opportunities from which they can develop self-confidence, social skills and awareness of the world in which they are valuable citizens. We believe that ‘Success Breeds Success’. For our students, life outside of the classroom is very varied and Wood Green Academy provides the best opportunities as well as they best support.
