Job overview

The geography department at Emanuel School aims to encourage in all pupils a curiosity about the world around them, and the knowledge and skills to describe and understand it. We are looking for a new member of the department to join us in April or September 2020 on a permanent basis. The role would suit a teacher with an enthusiastic and engaging approach to their work and inspirational love of geography. We will be looking for someone who can help our pupils fulfil their potential in this important subject area. 

We welcome applications from NQTs and recent graduates, as well as those with longer experience. All staff at Emanuel undertake a pastoral role as a form tutor, and get involved in the wider life of the school through its fieldwork and trips, co-curricular activities and outreach programmes. 

Our ideal candidate will be able to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in our pupils. They will be ready to challenge and be challenged, and will have additional interests that they can bring to the diverse co-curricular life of the school.

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1000 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 87% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 37% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 53%. This is 20% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic outcomes in the country. The recent ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next 3-4 years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both areas of traditional strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in last year’s Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.
