Job overview

The Governors of this outstanding Grammar School wish to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic Teacher of German for September 2022. The post is full-time and permanent. The ability to teach GCSE and A-level German is essential. A strong degree in German is sought, although candidates with a degree in a closely related discipline are welcome to apply. This post would suit a newly or recently qualified practitioner, for whom extensive support and encouragement will be given, or a more experience practitioner.

The Languages Department at WKGS is a vibrant exciting place to work and a place for all students to develop their linguistic skills in order to achieve their best in this area. They work in a suite of rooms and are a hard-working team who offer drop-in support sessions at lunchtimes alongside a number of activities for students to explore a love of languages outside of lessons. They promote thinking skills and confidence in the subject and as a result, the popularity of A-level Languages continues to grow. At GCSE level, all students choose at least one language and results are consistently outstanding.

Students follow a two-year KS4 at WKGS and almost all pupils are entered at the Higher Tier for German, having followed the Edexcel GCSE specification.  At Key Stage 5, the Edexcel A-level specification is covered; A-level classes are usually shared between two teachers, with topics being allocated according to their area of speciality.

Students are encouraged to take part in activities outside of the classroom; these include language clubs and competitions, a Key Stage 3 trip to Germany (either a Christmas Markets visit or a summer trip to the Rhineland) and the German Exchange in Year 10. In the 6th form, students are encouraged to spend time in Germany; some choose to take part in work experience there.  We have well-established partnerships with two schools, the Europaschule in Gladenbach and the Helmholtzschule in the centre of Frankfurt.

West Kirby Grammar School is a very successful selective girls’ school with a coeducational Sixth Form. There are over 1200 students on roll and results are outstanding. In 2019, a Progress 8 score of +0.76 was achieved and 61% of results were at grades 9-7. 20 students achieved 10 or more 9-7 grades. At A-level, 70% of grades where A*-B with the average grade achieved being a B.

West Kirby Grammar School believes in excellence and endeavours to promote the highest standards in all aspects of school life, whether in the classroom, on the sports field or in the community. Students are encouraged to explore and develop their talents and interests through a broad and balanced curriculum. Work in lessons is enriched by a wide range of other activities. The school provides an environment that is intellectually stimulating but secure, enabling students to prepare for the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century.

Learning in the classroom is enhanced and supported by field trips, educational visits and a wide range of other opportunities. As a Comenius School we have links with partner schools in other European countries, many established foreign exchanges and visits.

Year 7 and Year 9 enjoy residential outdoor opportunities and many of our senior students appreciate and benefit from the challenges presented by participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

The school is proud of its reputation for success in a wide range of competitive sports. Students are regularly selected to represent their sport at county, regional and national levels.

Pastoral care and guidance are important and Form Teachers play a key role. Heads of Year bridge and help to support the academic and personal development of the students.

The well being of the staff is equally important. Continuing Professional Development is offered to all. Staff are offered holistic therapy and use of the fitness suite as part of a well-being programme. The award of the National Healthy Schools’ Standard recognised the good work and the importance given to healthy living.

The vision for the school as a Science College is to be a centre of excellence on the Wirral and for Science and Mathematics teaching and learning. The school aims to raise overall standards from an already extremely high level in Science and Mathematics and across the whole curriculum at all Key Stages and to contribute to enhanced standards in Science and Mathematics in partner schools.

The school is a very happy one where teachers, support staff and students work well together to achieve the very best. We enjoy what we do and are proud of our achievements.
